Yes Reddit is not a great place to sell it is a micro forum website which help you get the better leads. you can make your brand popular among the reddit communities by involving into teh public discussion and solving their queries. This hep you increase your karma score and more and more people looking for your brand and business.
More karma also signified the power of brand and gives a greater visibility to your brand.

If you want to sell on Reddit run adverts, but they are quite savvy on Reddit so you may not get the best ROI. If you create a subreddit with the intentions of your website or products it's very likely to fall flat on it's face. As said above you would be far better engaging in active subreddit communities.

Reddit is a great place to hang out and pick up a few good links whilst having a bit of fun chatting around any topic, but I've never been able to drive much traffic and once you have a few links to your site, the incremental value of more much reduces.

It is well worth having an account with a few posts on etc, whenever I launch a new site or post to my blog - I usually link to it via Reddit as well as G+1 and Twitter

Reddit will help drive traffic to your website, but it's not the best option when it comes to selling. It is, however, a good way to get involved in the community your business fits in and get your name out there (in order words, generate brand awareness).

Get involved, answer questions, forge connections with other users and every so often link to your website/blog. Quora is also great for this.

Good luck!

Some of the answers in this thread are not particularly helpful to your question, saying 'Reddit isn't the place to sell at all' is not exactly true - Reddit is so large it's pretty much got a corner for absolutely everyone, you just have to find it.

Don't think of Reddit as one giant community, think of it as thousands of tables in a room with people on them, hell you could have even asked this question on the /r/marketing subreddit and that would be helping to achieve your initial goal.

You need to find a community, preferably a smaller subreddit that's within your topic or niche with not as many people. Engage with the community there until you're a well-known user, look for opportunities to promote what you do within the community, ask questions about what you do, soft sell.

Remember if you go in gung-ho you're likely to either just get flat out banned or really annoy a lot of users. Play the long game, build up your site karma and begin posting in other subreddits as well - get creative.

It's the place to do a lot of things, mainly because it's in the top 10 largest sites online, use it.
