naming of the hardware shop which could appeal to women.

Hi I know its a silly question. I had thought of naming my shop after my name and the word hardware (cos it does what it says on the tin) also couldn't think of any clever play on words. I intend to stock all the ususal, cookware and the odd childrens (diyi) toy. My concern is that the words hardware or ironmongers sound a bit masculine do any ladies have thoughts on this, would they not mind the name, or do you think that something a bit more arty might appeal.

Thanks for all advice.:D

Bc..knobs and knockers, the demographics of the area, are mainly retired and quite affluent young families...not sure that would really work in the area :) The names needs to be not too hardware orientated if you see...but I don't like the terms like homeware or housewares, too insipid.

Are you going to stock the famous Females Toolkit?

This consists of a roll of duck tape and a can of WD40.
The instructions read:

If it moves and shouldn't - use the tape
If it doesn't move but it should - use the WD40

:D

I'd say the word hardware is more associated with computers these days, and ironmongery is somewhat old-fashioned, so they are probably best avoided for these reasons.

Do you offer tips and advice? I'm sure that that would attract women. Perhaps a name like Tools and Tips.

Otherwise, have Home, Home Improvement, Kitchen Style or something like that in your name to attract women.

Another couple of suggestions:
Tools and Teapots
Doing It for Yourselves (or Ourselves) [this phrase brings to mind the Eurythmics' feminist anthem "Sisters are doing it for themselves"]

Im not aiming solely at women, its just that I can't afford to ignore such a big demographic and lots of women now are beyond the basic diy stage but still so don't want it to sound to gender specific.

Susan p I like the Tools & Teapots a lot, seems to appeal to both genders but teapots, might be a bit twee...oh Im fussy!

Good point about the hardware being ass with computers.

Not to sound sexist (get ready to hear something sexist) women very rarely visit a hardware store!

I am a man, have been in many DIY/Hardware shops and I have VERY rarely seen women there.

It seems silly to aim your name towards a demographic that doesn't visit your type of shop dunnit?

I don't really know what a hardware store sells. I always thought it was nails and hammers and wood and stuff but on Mary Queen of Shops last night the hardware store had cards, toys, shoes and other weird out of place things.

It's a strange place for us women, we feel disoriented and confused.:D When I go to B&Q etc you wouldn't get chance to see me wandering around because I don't. I walk in. find someone who works there, tell him what I need, follow him to the shelf, take packet he gives me then walk to the till. 3 mins in and out! Why do I want to spend time milling around looking at drill bits and different grade sandpaper????:)

This thread is making me giggle :D ... some ace names ...

I always go in Ironmonger shops ... they're ace :D ... I think the problem is that women don't go in them because they assume it's just tools ...

Just make sure you have a great and ever changing window display that shows off your wares to the girlies ;)

Personally I'd go with your name and Ironmogers as I love tradition when it's done right. A quirky name although funny at first can quickly become tacky :( ... sorry just my opinion.

There is a fab shop up here called Perry Higgins ... Just the two surnames of the owners ... I love it :D ... it sounds so solid and real x

Lollllz

I wonder if a woman would ever understand a mans need to spend 1.5 hours testing different claw hammers (including practise swings) then assessing the power of various power tools for another 2.25 hours when he only came in to buy some wall plugs...?

Its the only time I'll ever go shopping and end up with WAY more stuff than I intended on buying..

I would happily spend hours in B&Q, Homebase, etc
I bet your thinking of those masculine places like Wickes, Focus and eek ScrewFix. Those are the places to go if you want to see a man grappling with a tool.

Hi

Going back on what a couple of people have said

Knobs & Knockers
A mixed response, but it has done what a name should do, be remembered, even people remember it from their childhood.
Tacky maybe but if you wanted a personalised greeting card your going to put the tackiest of all names in to google....I do not even have to say it

Women Dont shop at DIY stores, try telling the misses that, I am the one who is more reluctant to go to the DIY store, that means she wants something doing around the house.

Sorry but the only name I could think of was

"Handy Mandy's Hardware Store"

Just so you know OP, there are plenty of women like me who do DIY.

I am no stranger to a ladder, whilst my husband stands at the bottom shouting,'you've missed a bit'.:D
If a fuse goes he just looks at me until I approach the box.
If shelves need making from scratch, and it entails a visit to a timber merchants I'm your girl.

Whilst he enjoys unblocking things, sinks and toilets, anything he has to stick something into and pull it out again rapidly.

Ahem, no euphemistic opportunities were intended.:)
