My email set up

Utterly clueless question here, hoping that someone can help me set up my email in a more straight-forward way?

In a nutshell - Hosted by LCN (who were once good, not just obsessed with upselling)

Forwarded to Gmail

So far so good....

I also have an outlook set up - which is currently registering a send/receive error.

Now, what I really don't know is what the point of the Outlook bit is. Can I just bin it?

In the dim, distant past, I recall being told it was an important part of the process, but I can't remember why.

If I do need it, any ideas how to make it work?

Thanks in advance...

If you are happy to use gmail (Webmail) then you can ditch outlook, if like me you like to keep a backup of your emails locally and also deal with multiple mailboxes from multiple providers then you might want to configure outlook to connect to gmail (not difficult) and check your mail that way. If you use IMAP instead of POP3 then it all stays on the interwebs anyway so you can still check in via webmail as well. Another option, ditch outlook and install thunderbird which is my preference.

How is the email being forwarded to Gmail? Are you forwarding it to a Gmail address, or is Gmail set up to pull in the emails from the LCN account? Is the Outlook program set up to do the forwarding (which would make the "important part of the process" comment correct)?
    I almost understand that one!

Gmail is pulling it. I recently changed passwords, which might be part of the answer

As others said, Outlook is the 'email client'.

In an ideal world you don't need one and you can access your email directly on Gmail/Google.

But what if your internet connection is down? Or what if you lose access to your Gmail account or worse, your other email account?

This is where email clients can save the day as a backup repository. You would still have access to your email copies on your PC, even though you cannot access the main source.

This can be a lifesaver if you need to look up an old email but you can't access the online version.

I have it set up this way with a different email client, but Outlook does the same.

Thank you - I guess that's one of those things you discover at the wrong time!

The best email system I have ever used and I really miss it is Blackberry !
It was built for the logistics industry where things have to be done fast and systems have to be simple :)

    Everything new is crap!
