Music Magpie what a con

I have just seen an advert on the TV for Music Magpie, similar to the Cash for gold scheme but they buy cds, dvds, and games.

Out of interest I just visited the site and did a search one box set of 28 dvd's which cost me £199 4 months ago and currently on sale for £110 there offer is just £3.00

You can really see where their profit comes from even searching ebay and amazon the cheapest same box set i'v found is £65.00 (used)

I also read their disclaimer which says:

Please note that if you do not follow the above criteria we will unfortunately be unable to accept the item. When this happens, we reserve the right to not pay you for the item and also we will also not be able to return the item so please ensure you follow these guidelines. Full details are contained in our terms and conditions

Is it just me or does this term basically say we can keep your item, not give you any money and not send it back either.

I have used Music Magpie to clear a large number of CDs after transferring to itTunes and my iPod.

For CD albums they were pretty good - about £1 each and trust me, by CDs were old (music wise!)

Worked well for me - the alternative would be an ebay listing where you have all the hassle of listing, posting individually, getting paid etc.

I just wanted to be shot and worked out well for me

The price would be determined by supply & demand. If loads of people are trading the same item but they (being Magpie) do not have a huge demand for that item then the price offered would be low.

The prices that are seen on Amazon and Ebay are largely irrelevant - Magpie are a business and will buy as cheaply as possible and sell for as much as possible. That's what they do.

I also think it's fair to post a link to their T&Cs as your post makes it look like they are a bunch of theives who simply decide what they will pay for depending on the weather or some other silly criteria. Here's a link: http://www.musicmagpie.co.uk/terms_conditions_sellit.asp

It's pretty clear to me what needs to be done to get the value offered. I've checked a few items myself . I had x2 Dr Who complete Season 3 - and they only offered about £4.00 for this. Obviously I didn't trade it with them but people do as it is quick and easy. They are given the choice of trading and based on the growth of the business I would say they have a high number of users who are only to happy to accept the prices they offer.

I live in Macclesfield, which is where they are based. They run the only music shop in town and it's a brilliant shop! I've seen the business open & grow over the 2 years they have been trading. They are still growing and provide much needed employment in this little market town.

They get a 'thumbs up' from me.

It's hard to call it a con, they aren't doing anything illegal. People have every option to go through the headache of selling on Ebay, onlocal boards etc to get more money. Or they can simply be shot of their stuff through this site for a quick sale

It's the same thing as Mazuma mobile, they offered me £2 for my ancient Blackberry but I decided to sell it on Ebay and got £30. You make your choice!!
