Hi,

We have an eCommerce site using the Prestashop platform and we are looking at changing the platform to Opencart.
My dilemma is would I be going backwards in terms of changing? Has any one else done this before? If you have done the change was it easy to do?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Regards,

Mark.

Hello,
It's about as easy as to any other platform really, there are no free automated ways to move everything over so usually you would do some sort of CSV export from the prestashop and code in some way to import into opencart as needed, there are paid services such as https://litextension.com/opencart-migration/prestashop-to-opencart-migration.html

And then obviously you have to theme up your shop and etc as required.

But personally I do prefer OpenCart to PrestaShop, just easier to modify, extend and improve/customize as needed. Love it.

Many people move from their store to another eCommerce platform every day. The change could be a huge step forwards if you choose an eCommerce site more suitable for your business. OpenCart is a good choice, but I prefer WooCommerce to OpenCart, because WooCommerce is better in CMS, has large community and easier to use.

There's a cheap eCommerce data migration service provided by Next-Cart you can try. They can help you transfer eCommerce data, extension data and fix errors.

You will have a lot of works to do after transfer the data including customize theme, install extensions, etc. Just do it!

One of the best things of OpenCart is easy to use and a great admin interface. A non-technical person can create an e-commerce website using OpenCart easily without needed prior knowledge.
Though WooCommerce is better it does not best fit for the long run. because WordPress need more customization for heavy traffic to get the website up to time.
    A good choice btw.

If you use customer groups then they all show up in guest checkout.
Manual orders do not get customer group discounts.
Stock control is broken, customers can still order things that are out of stock, maybe when they ar e product options.
    etc...

Why? If it aint broke dont fix it.

You should have soled reasons to change platform. I am not saying you should not, but you should know the benefits are worth the costs and risk.

Also, always test a new system thoroughly before it goes live.

Opencart is OK, but it does have some odd behaviours. Also, most sensible plugins are not free so for further development you will have to pay for a plugin or a developer. And there are often times when there are situations where you don't understand why some type of behaviour does not exist out of the box.

If you just want products and categories it works well once set up. adding additional content is annoying.

As you can see, there is no consensus.

There are pro's and cons' in various platforms. Find out what they are, and make your own decision. Or, if you are engaging a web developer who you trust, go with their preferences.

I don't see your proposal as a step backwards if the implementation is done well. But I would be very clear on my reasons for wanting to change platform before I did so.

Ironically, I have a Prestashop site... moved from Opencart (1.7x)

For my money Prestashop is much better for my needs (I needed a documented database schema, which Opencart never had ...this allows me to pull in stuff directly from the cart database).

My only gripe with Prestashop is the slow BO User Interface (Opencart was warp factor 10 in comparison)

I dont think OpenCart 1.7 ever existed... the last OpenCart 1.x release was 1.5.2. So are you sure you was even using OpenCart?

Also the 1.x branch was very VERY early in OpenCart's development, it has improved by leaps and bounds since those days.

Therefore is was likely 1.5x...it was definitely Opencart - I used it for about 5yrs!

Speedy cart software, but ultimately poorly documented ...and you had to be the type of bloke who doesn't go out much, coding until the early hours (drinking full sugar coke) & wearing a Black Sabbath T Shirt to be able to address things when they went Pete Tong.
