In conversation with an IT bod, he came up with a simple diagnosis of my IT issue 'You just need more memory - just but some in PC world for £20, take off the side and plug it in'.

That was in the pub - obviously PC world wanted lots more info,

My PC is unbranded - how do I find out what memory I need?

Also, is it really just a case of 'take off the side and plug it in'?

Help gratefully appreciated - as ever!

Pretty much correct yes... Turn the power off, and make sure you insert it the right way around, and that's pretty much it. Very easy job to do.

You might want to pull the memory out of the computer to take it with you to PC World - it will normally have the details about it on a sticker stuck to the memory module, you could just write down this info, or you can try this app which will tell you what memory type you need.

The other information you need to know is whether your operating system is 32bit, or 64bit, as this will dictate the total amount of memory you're computer can use. As it seems you need more RAM, I'd hazard a guess that you're running a 32bit OS.

Also, some motherboards have restrictions on the amount of RAM each socket can handle, so you really need to know these details too.

(edit)

Maybe get your friend to look at it, or just take the whole computer (the box bit) down to PC world and let one of them sort it out for you! :D
