Moderating Forums

Selective moderation now appears on this forum which is becoming rather annoying. I and several others have had messages deleted when in business forum there are so many irrelevant threads ie. nochex (ecommerce) law about flyers (legal) etc.

Quite, I made a comment to someone's post in franchise which was just a banter to say that 'e' was missing. Many people make off-the-cuff comments like this in other forums, which is what makes the forum as it is, friendly. Yes, this post was deleted

This is not aimed at any of the authors but it does appear that Moderators are quick on the mark to delete threads/post and not move the irrelevant ones.

I also know that even one member was told privately in a roundabout way to 'shut-up'. This is way over the top and Mods should treat each member respectfully since it is us that keeps a forum going.

This is equally as annoying as advertising, pixel sites etc.

With my current workload and the examinations I have to take in the coming months I will probably take my useful advice elsewhere and devote more time to other things.

PS. This post will be deleted shortly no doubt. If so, a sign that we are being controlled on what we can say.

I corrected Jaynes spelling and deleted the post saying the spelling was wrong.

If you've really got a problem feel free to contact a Moderator, if you have a problem with a moderator talk to Ozzy.

But just posting stuff slating moderators is not a nice or positive way of resolving stuff and contributes to negativity on the forums.

Rob, you had cut my original post and created it in ANOTHER forum as ANOTHER thread without any reference i.e <moved to feedback>. Do you expect us to search for the post when we could rightly assume it has been deleted?

I replied to Jayne's post as a banter and not just to correct it. You could have left it. I think your finger appears to be glued on the 'delete' button of late

I am not directly slanting Moderators, but expressing how I feel this forum has been moderated of late. I won't bother to complain to Ozzy because I know he will side with you.

I have been a long-standing and active member of this forum and not had a problem with your moderating, only just recently it appears biased.

If you are going to moderate fairly, then I suggest that you also move other irrelevant threads, posts of correction/banter, etc

I also had to dash out as I moved it for an emergency with my son at school but took the time while I was rushing up the road to his school to call Ozzy who was also busy and ask him to look at it.

Oh, its Mr Attitude himself who is clearly biased! Steve, why don't you just get lost. You clearly could not understand when I said 'Just FYI...' and you simply took it the wrong way.

You obviously find it OK to call a disabled person 'handicapped' and probably find it OK to call a black person '******', both being politically incorrect. You probably would take offence if one of your disabled employees (as you say you have) came up to you and politely said to refrain from using the term 'handicapped'

It is easy to say when your posts are not deleted and I do not just do one-liners and my comments may provoke a debate, which some may deem it as a question of their attitude.

Yes, and until recently I had no idea you were disabled. I find it laudable that you kept this fact to yourself for so long, and now I understand why you answered some previous posts the way you did.

I probably shouldn't poke my nose into this thread, but it pains me to see two of the smartest members of the forum having an open dispute of this type. Yes, I'm arrogant for interfering, but please let's demonstrate some personal respect. We never really know the personal situation of others, and sometimes a flippant comment can hit a raw nerve. If that turns out to be the case, it's better to post conciliatory messages than inflamatory ones.

In business, we don't have to like everyone we meet or work with - but we can pretend that we do.

You appear to be clearly out of touch with these issues. As an employer I fear for your employees. Maybe some 'Disability awareness training' may prove beneficial for your organisation.

Hi Jonathan and Steve.

I would just like to say that I like both of you and find you both very interesting people. I'm writing this because I wouldn't want either of you to stay away from UKBF.

I can understand Steve having his very interesting 'dilemma' thread interrupted with something irrelevant like political correctness. Perhaps a seperate thread in a more relevant forum would have been more appropriate to make us all aware.

I can also understand Jonathan's gripe about being labelled as some sort of 'beggar' by society. I'm sure that, like myself, Steve and many others were not aware that the term originated from such demeaning behaviour. Now that I know about this, I will never use the term again for anyone who I think doesn't deserve it.

Also, I think we should all rememember that this meduim of communication, which lacks body language, can be very misleading as to the true personalities of people. I am often guilty of appearing over-sensitive myself. Seeing two sensible people behaving like this makes me more aware of how rediculous I must appear sometimes!

Thank you, what people look like, whether they are disabled or not, is irrelevant to the forum. People should bear in mind that there is always a human behind every post and I have made my personal feelings very clear indeed.

Well said. This thread is actually about Moderating forums and Steve Roberts had to jump in to call me an idiot.

It is his own problem when I merely said in the most polite manner that 'Just FYI... physically handicapped...is not politically correct' I would say the same if someone called a black person '******'. If I said 'handicapped' was offensive, I would be accused of being politically correct - cannot win!

For anyone's information, I am not 'physically' disabled. I am hard of hearing

Personally I feel that some of the moderation I have observed has been quite biased, but lets see how everyone feels, avoiding uneccesary dispute.

My point is made. Its the end of the matter as far as I am concerned. The above posts are 'off-topic' anyway, however they do raise important issues and it has gone on to raise other important issues, such as forum moderation.

I request that the Moderators lock this thread to ensure it remains the end of the matter.

You made a very informed and valued post here where you yourself mentioned the difficult situation facing moderators on forums. This still stands, we are all human and have to make a decision based on what we see in front of us and hope it is the best, after all as you said we are just human.

I have said myself on these forums that I would like Alan, Rob (and now Duane) to please try and help to keep the business forums strictly on topic and only allow offtopic discussion in the offtopic area.
We are also trying to cut down the self promotion and overuse of banners, etc in signature. I have already edited a couple of members signatures on their accounts and emailed them explaining why, and Mark Pearson is due to get a message from me shortly too.

I few posts have been edited by moderators and myself with the member being PM'd explaining what has happened.

Also I do not just side with the moderator if I feel he made a wrong judgement call, as has happened a couple of time I have dropped a line to Alan or Rob.
What does happen a lot if they are unsure they PM me and ask me what I think, which is what happened with the post where Rob deleted all the messages. The situation appeared that it would spiral into a slagging match so the decision was made to delete all the posts that were heading that way and go back in time to when the thread was ontopic.

There are many subjects that hit peoples sensitive areas and often lead into arguments. These are mainly religion, descrimination (race, disability, etc), and other issues that boil down to indiviuduals personal believes and upbringing. If I had my way I would ban certain topics as it does my bloody head in when people start bickering over stupid things that dont even need to be dragged up and beaten to death in pointless threads. However, I can't because everyone on here is just human and has feelings, and it would be great if we all remembered that and respected each other.

If you feel the urge to argue a point then you are wrong. Go away, have a cup of tea, come back and read another post instead.
We all have better things to do with our time and squable on a business forum.
