As a matter of interest, how many people use business (or personal but I'm mainly concerned with Business) mobiles and what do you do with your old handsets?:|

Hello all,

I am interested in finding out how many businesses and offices actually implement some kind of 'environmentally friendly' working policies.

For example, recycling paper and ink cartridges, not printing out excessive and unnecessary pieces of paper, using recycled or environmentally sound office products such as recycled stationery and pens.

Or maybe you have set up a way of reducing your carbon footprint or limit the number of times the kettle is boiled! I would be really interested to discover what people are actually doing at work to make a difference - no matter how small.

Being a recycling company, we do everything we possibly can. We recycle pretty much all waste, bale cardboard, have waste collection points for staff and recycle mobile phones for businesses, public, schools, charities et al.

Its quite a nice feeling to know I'm working for such a green company

I have a business contract with multiple accounts. Old phones tend to sit in a drawer for a year or so in the vague intention that one day they will get recycled. Eventually the realisation dawns that we have piles of crap everywhere, that recycling is not going to happen, so they get binned, along with the tower of old printer ink and toner cartridges which have also been stored for some never-arriving green demise.

It seems to me that Joe Public is more aware of the financial benefits while business seem to do exactly what you have described - collect and store with the intention os recycling but ultimately end up binning them.

Spot on - I would think that for most people, (i.e. those not likely to be reading a 'green' forum), the intention is good but the realisation of that intent is a touch more haphazard.

I have a business contract with T-Mobile and sell the old ones on ebay.

You could always recycle your old phone by giving it to a charity. There is Guide Dogs, Children in need, Oxfam and many more.

Our local sports shop has a shoe recycling box outside which always gets filled. How about mobile phone shops having a similar recycling box?

I've used envirofone (in a personal capacity) a couple of times. At my firm, we collect all phones up, send them to envirofone and then give the cash to charity.

My firm does.

We're always reusing packaging materials, turning off lights & comps when not needed.

If the price is viable, we prefer to buy recycled stuff for internal use, but not where it might affect our image (for example poor quality marketing material is a no no).

The company I work for encourages going green! I have sold my handsets to mobilephonexchange through our corporate account. Its actually a pretty cool service.

my company usually sells them on ebay or if there broken ect they hand them into a repair firm who can pass them onto who ever they want once finished with them.

I always compare which recycling company will offer me the most and if I am not sure about the company I will look at the reviews first

Thanks for that info, I was looking around for a place to recycle a whole handful of phones the other day.

Envirofone was ok, though when I did a comparison on a site called Compare and Recycle, I found a better deal elsewhere.

Many charities also have envelopes for this. I send mine to Amnesty International and they'll even send me more freepost envelopes if I need them (up to two phones per envelope if I remember rightly) So if you have a particular charity your business would like to support it's worth asking them.

Mobile recycling has helped alot to the environment, no wastes are dumped causing harm. Most parts of dead phones can be reused to make new mobile phones. Moreover it has created job opportunities in the informal sector. Be wise and dont dump your old phones,sell them to recycling companies.

I saw something on the real hustle last night about how much information people can get from your mobile phone if you lose it or it gets stolen. It was pretty scary! The hustlers managed to get enough info off some people's phones to indulge in a bit of identity theft. One of the guys even had his bank card pin number in his phone.
I think I'll probably just restore the factory settings on my phone and get it recycled.

I definitely agree send your phone to a specialist phone recycling company, do your background check on them to see what happens to them though. Also choose one that has signed up to the agreement where they check serial numbers against lists of stolen phones. the more ethical the company is the better. The site or company should be very clear about these points.
