One of the companies I do work for has asked me to research into using a mobile phone tracking service for their business mobile phones to occasionally look at the location of their travelling sales people.

Can anyone recommend a provider?

Your post is very valid, it is appreciable. There many websites are selling Mobile tracking software, but you must have to search your required software in google for the best options. I would like to suggest you some keywords regarding your tracking software. These are mobile tracking, mobile tracking software, mobile phone tracker, mobile tracker.

I have used mobile antivirus software to do this in the past

http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/kaspersky_mobile_security

The software has the ability to locate a lost phone using the built-in GPS.

I think you will have acceptance problems if the salesmen were told that there whereabouts will be tracked by GPS. I have deployed solutions to track company cars but tracking mobile phones which a person normally carries with them is a different issue!

What if they show up at a massage parlour when off duty

Its worth having a look at Soti Software, Soti allows users to track and remote control/review devices, making it ideal for any company who has employees in the field, whether sales, engineers or delivery people.

Hi

Not sure whether this is still relevant but there are few things that you need to do if you are intending to track employees:

1. Make them aware - I would suggest making an amendment to any company handbook you might have. Whatever your reasons H&S and Insurance tend to be generally accepted by employees
2. Ensure that they have to periodically consent to being tracked via your chosen system.
3. Try to go for a system where you can change the tracking time to suit working hours
4. Make tracking data available to employees should they ask to see it

The security products are different. Location tracking is one thing but the MDM (Mobile Device Management) products tend to be separate.

So I guess it's down to what you client actually wants - location tracking is commonly part of much larger workload management software although tracking apps are becoming more available and are much cheaper.

If I can help further feel free to email me.
