Mobile App Question.

This is going to be quite an open question, as I understand depending on the size, scale and complexity, the costs vary.....

HOWEVER taking everything into account when developing a mobile app for iPhone, Android etc, how much on average do they cost to build?

The questions to open to start, what type of app we talking about first?

Hi. I can only offer info based on how we develop an app at Reactiv. We have a starting cost of c.£1,350 for the development of a functional but starter level, bespoke app, however, the cost can be many times higher depending on the complexity, functionality of the app and level of user control required. We can usually scale things to suit a given budget, however, this probably doesn't tell you everything as that cost will include our margin and build costs. The actual build cost will depend on the time involved in design and development (we don't outsource any element of the build).

I guess the answer is similar to website design.... you can buy cheap, template driven, customisable websites for a few hundred pounds or pay many thousands for a full e.commerce site.

Hi Chris,

I agree with one aspect of a fellow poster in that you could view it like shopping for a website. There's cheap and cheerful and then there's high-end.

However, Apple don't allow apps into iTunes that look really cheap (or at least they don't now, their review process is quite stringent).

However, many companies don't have a base fee. For instance, I'm the founder of Tradebox Media ( dot com, if you'd like a look!) and we take all kinds of work, big and small. Complex and simple.

As a guideline, you'll be looking at 1-1.5K for a smart, intuitive application that acts as an entry portfolio to your organisation with some native iOS features. The real expense come when proper custom coding comes into play.

I'd be happy to go through your requirements if you'd like to get in touch.

Regards,

Stephen.

there are quite a few decent books whic go on about app development.
There are several different types of apps.
most are just a nice front end running a bit of code that queries your database and compares it to say your location. Not hard.
The big problem (costs) come when you have to build the whole database or program that it relies on. If you have a website or have the actual program you are 80% of the way there already.
My new one cost £250,000
You must have an exact specification or you will run into subcontractor hell.

you can quite easily get a realistic quote from an outsourcing site like elance or a crowd sourcing site like 99 designs. The accuracy will very much depend on how accurately you can create a brief. You have have to be careful though - cheaper isnt always cheaper. look for feedback or testimonials

It depends on what kind of app you are going to develop. A simple app with limited number of features can be not expensive, but if you plan a huge, long-term project - it can cost you a lot. Have a look at some projects and their prices on the websites like Odesk. You can also write a short project description and ask for an estimate. Most of the software development companies will provide it for free.
