Misspelling in searches

I was just about to buy a new website name but had a quick look at the keyword tool just to check first.

To my horror, the generic word which I wanted to use in my URL was only spelled correctly in one out of six searches and misspelled in the other five.

Does it matter?

Will Google take into account the incorrect spelling when people do searches and direct them to a site selling the item with the correct spelling? I can't bring myself to use the wrong spelling although surely language evolves in such a way that the wrong spelling will eventually become the correct one?

Hi,

You should definitely use the right spelling in your domain name.

If you are really worried about people not being able to find you, then you could also purchase misspelled domains and point them to your main URL.

However, this should not be necessary as Google and other main search engines are very good at "guessing" what people are trying to find and do recognise misspelled words.

All the best :)

There was a radio article a while back showing how Google was far better at interpreting a mis-spelt word than the average spell-checker. This was especially true for dyslexic typists.

The reasons lies in the Google seach algorithm's ability to 'learn' based on what people actually click on after typing a particular word.
