Hi all,

I'm in the market for a small laptop. It really only needs to have a wireless web browser and pdf viewer as it is for field sales. The main criteria is portability, quick boot up and good battery life.

I don't want to spend a fortune as the "real" work is on the PCs at the office. This is just to demonstrate stuff to the customer.

Any suggestions as to the best place to look? When I Google there are so many options I don't know where to start!

well if ur using it to show customers u should go for looks.. (dont want to be sitting in front of a customer and take out ur low cost- budget laptop that looks like it was made out of cheap chinese plastic). Have a look at the MSI Wind and HP mini-note, two of the better looking UMPC's

Don't even think about buying the one with Linux OS. You will have a problem with connecting a mobile broadband for the start, they don't look professional and they are not reliable enough.

If I were you I would go to Amazon and look for some nice laptops, you can find great HP or Sony for reasonable price. If you are not keen to make any search, just go to Dell web site, choose some nice colour and go for it, I think you shouldn't be disappointed .

I bought an Advent mini from PC World.

I love it, I hardly use my Compaq laptop now! It has XP with 80GB hard drive with 1024 MB memory. My mobile internet connection works well as does the wifi built in connection. 10" screen, boots up quickly. Drawback? Well, no CD drive but I am going to get one to plug into the usb. Battery lasts well if you use the power saving option.

I also run it off my car fag lighter by way of a small inverter

I assume you want one of the new mini laptops or netbooks as they are now offically called.

If so I would recommend the EEE PC range from Asus, they start at about £160 upwards. You can get them with either Linux or XP installed and a varying level of screen sizes. The 9" screen is probably the best trade off between portability and practical use.

The demand for them is massive at the moment and Asus have been making laptops for other people for years so they know what they are doing.
