Can anyone recommend a good place to purchase online, hundreds of prices, some claim there is an offer on etc, would prefer to buy from a legit source, pref a one off rate rather than monthly subscription.

If you wanna buy a legit license Amazon is well priced for MS perpetual licenses but expect to pay around £220 - £350 for the latest office 2021 Home and business or higher for a perpetual license.

Next problem would be to figure out on what version of MacOS you are.

3 versions are supported on MacOS until you need to upgrade the vision again. For MacOS Office 2019 wouldn't be very future proof and not supported on next MacOS upgrade. Also on the latest 3 macOS you cant install 2016 anymore and get it to work.

There is very little margins on office so amazon is a good guide line for pricing. Expect all version costing £200. Pay less to be grey or black market codes they work but are doggy at best. Any MS office plus version shouldn't be even sold as they are not for retail and they are plenty being sold.

For MacOS perpetual or subscription is the same price over 3 years ownership so if you upgrade to any new MacOS version you pay the same only if you stay on the same version version of MacOS over 4 years the perpetual license works better.

@Nico Albrecht and @forevergroup can help with this next bit; as someone who's been down this road and ended up on a subscription model. I'd recommend considering Microsoft365 and using it for your email and perhaps even calls too, then by the time you take into account maintenance/upgrades it isn't that bad of a subscription.

I only pay £86/year for a business O365 package. And that’s tax deductible.

I agree that libreoffice is a much better package but there are occasions where you have to use an MS product. Which is why I’ve got a stand-alone PC for just that. Everything else is done on a Mac.

    so unbelievably buggy
Just for curiosity what kind of bugs you came around and on what version of MacOS?

O365 is a quite a stable product on MacOS Catalina and on any newer version crashes are related to MacOS causing the crashes based on log file extraction showing permission issues or extensions added to Word, Excel and outlook.
