Members Geographic Locations...

Just wondered if there is an easy way to see the geographic location of our members. Like a map or something with dots on. Each dot represents the member's location.

Weird request? Maybe........ :)

Great idea kay :)

It could easily be done with a Google Map or (my preferred choice) Virtual Earth

I often use Virtual Earth to quickly demonstrate a point like [the map in] this post for example:

Horsham Cycle Routes

This simplest way would be to set up a UKBF Windows Live account and have the password in an FAQ in the private area. Members could then simply add themselves to the map.

Going a few steps further; Swift could amend our profile database to hold a lat / long field and the automatically read this into a VE Map.

If you look at my Virtual Horsham site that does not actually contain its own data. It simply reads and combines it from existing databases.

If there was enough interest I would be willing to start off and coordinate a UKBF Windows Live VE Map.

Great! Then it will be easier to network with others I guess.

Gill, I joined in Sept so I must have missed that. Did it work? I know for sure that I will benefit from knowing who else is in my area :)

Now you mention it that rings a few bells!

Let's see what Garry says but I still reckon it could be worth doing a VE one. MS have recently updated a lot of the aerial photos to 12.cm resolution with more area to follow.

Have a look at the imagery in your local area you may be surprised at the quality. Many people are now getting the new hi-rez images for free. I had to pay too add them to Virtual Horsham!

Me still getting to know members on here, I do recognise some members but not the majority on creospace (not creacoms) past project....

If everyone thinks this is a good idea as in to implement it to the ukbf site, shall we instigate a poll or is the issue not so simple?

The first rule of UKBF is: Don't mix up creacom with creospace.

The second rule of UKBF is ......... ;) :)

Poll not required - you will need to post on the feedback and help forum as an idea and see if the forum owners want to do it.

Happy to give them code to embed the map I started or of course they can do their own, I know the google maps api is very good for this sort of thing from what I've seen.

Gary from 'CREOSPACE' (who aren't base in or near scotland) <-- just for clarity :)

Err spot my deliberate mistake - this is in feedback and help lol! DOH DOH!

It could be made a feature of the new directory i guess so if you want to be featured on the map you have to leave a postcode or town name at least.
