So what are the best ways to market and promote your newly launched ecommerce store?

Obviously SEO is key to getting people to your site and shop, but if you have an SEO specialist working to boost you up the search rankings - what else can you do as a business owner to promote and market the launch of your site?

Sort term, have you thought of using eBay? Once you start making sales on there, you can send invitations with the products you send to invite them to register with your website. If you give an incentive such as to enter a competition or special members discount, people will want to join - this then opens the door for using email marketing. Keep in mind that good e-mail marketing isn't about sending sales blurb in an e-mail - good e-mail marketing is about providing informative content that is both useful to the customer and that also inspires them to engage with you, whether that is to make a purchase, browse your website to recommend you to a friend.

Other ways you can market your website is through using social media like Facebook and pay-per-click advertising. Keep in mind that you need to have a plan for your marketing strategy - it's not just about getting people to your website, it's about getting the right people to your website who want to buy what you sell.

first thing, make sure your site isn't **** or ugly.

then

PPC.
SEO.
PR.
buy banners.

if you're going to be in it for the long-term, go for affiliate marketing.

if you've got big bucks, hire an internet marketing agency.

but, since you're asking for advice on marketing after launching a store, i guess you haven't thought about it all properly.

My site isn't horrible or ugly, a lot of time, effort and money has been spent getting it right so were not too worried on that front.

We have got an SEO guy working on the rankings to boost it up, we are still waiting to see the results of that.

Personally, we have thought a lot about marketing in terms of social media, viral campaigns and even targeted localised door drops and those are being actioned as necessary.

But I tried to keep the question open, so it wasn't specifically related to my situation and was broad enough to help others.

I wanted to put it out there for what the 'average business owner' can do off their own initiate to help market and promote their stores.

My approach towards e-commerce marketing depends upon the type of business and whether or not they also have a bricks and mortar store.

The websites that I run take over a million pounds worth of sales per year but they started out from scratch. It can be done without spending much money at all.

Like any service, there are good providers and bad providers. SEO is no different. There are companies that mistify the process to make it seem like they are doing a difficult job. There are those that do a good job no matter how easy or dificult it is getting you ranking up. Its a lot easier to check those results if you have your own tools available. The following link shows the tools you can use and monitor your site for free. You should be able to check for visible effects of SEO work if you are concerned with "having seen no effect yet" Of course it would help if you had a base line prior to their work starting...

Personally, we have thought a lot about marketing in terms of social media, viral campaigns and even targeted localised door drops and those are being actioned as necessary.

social media - use twitter as a customer care and advice and promotion tool - special offers, allow customers to ask questions about their orders or products. use facebook to gather fans, implement sharethis on product pages and on the thank you after checkout page (I just bought this Washing Machine from YourShop.com)

viral - not really feasible for ecommerce. viral stuff is more for brands.

door drops - waste of money for anything on the internet.

are customers coming onto your site to research, or to buy? where are they coming from? check out your analytics, because they'll show some unusual entry search terms normally.

optimise your site for conversions. how high is your bounce rate? start with the page with the highest bounce rate (excluding homepage) and start optimising it for conversions.

implement behavioural merchandising, whether in the form of a simple magento plugins or a more advanced service if you have a lot of traffic (like PredictiveIntent)

PR - think about where you want to position your self - niche, not the cheapest, or cheap and cheerful? if niche, target bloggers in the field, offer them samples in exchange for reviews, if cheap and cheerful, do something really wacky that could get in the Sun or something).

are there any events you could sponsor or appear at, like trade shows etc.

optimise your email marketing - segment, make it really relevant, push visitors into signing up for your newsletter for a discount code or something.

make sure your site can be accessed properly and that orders can go through on iphones, android phones and blackberrys. people with those phones expect to be able to access any website without trouble, people who don't have those phones aren't in the same mindset to buy online so you don't need to worry about symbian etc phones.

make sure you've done everything else, like one page checkouts, "free" delivery (include it in the prices)

make sure your datafeed is on google shopping. just list your site on as many shopping directories as you can find on the net - both for SEO and because they can give a trickle of traffic.

PPC - try microsoft advertising because they do yahoo too and are cheaper than google - and since msn is the default homepage for most computers, people might just search straight away from there.

make sure you've got fuzzy searching, either done manually/basically or done through a proper service like FACTFinder.

optimise your transactional emails - upsells, cross-sells, forward to a friend discounts.

make sure you're writing on your blog about the products you sell - these should help you for general SEO and for catching some general longtail keywords.

ummmmmm.........

i think i'm going to write blog posts soon about every method which could help optimise conversions and every way i can think of to get traffic...

In addition to having a well optimised on-line shop very importantly you need relevant third party inbound links from other websites with a good PR

Maybe see if your suppliers will oblige.

If we were estate agents we would be saying "location", "location", "location" but in our industry our mantra is "relevant third party inbound links", "relevant third party inbound links", "relevant third party inbound links".

But its a very tough one to crack !

Whatever you do, DO NOT purchase links from sites that sell links as Google see that as cheating (they even have a form now where webmasters can report such sites selling links) and if you are caught doing that you will be penalised in Google SERPs albeit it might not happen straight away.

Promote it offline as well. Send out fliers to your family and friends. Post to bulletin boards too.
It realy depends what your product is. If everybody could want/buy one then fliers may be effective. If you have a specialist market (say 10% of people) then with fliers you are simply sending 90% of your spend to people who are not interested from the start. One of the major reasons why people use SEO is that people who visit your site via search terms are already interested in your product. Then you need to convince them you are a) reliable /trustworthy b) good value.
