Hey Guys,

I'm interested to know how you'd go about doing this. If you operated an agency and wanted freelance projects you had the agency website and your personal website how would you separate the two?

Would you blog about your clients on your personal website when they're your agency clients? What would you do?

Dan.

Hi Dan, I am in a similar situation to you, though I use just a personal blog.

What I do is blog about SEO, use personal case studies (not clients) and show off a little, but then have a 'work with me' tab where people can see the packages I offer etc.

This works better for me, and helps get a lot of traffic to the site without really doing much (ironic), since I am just being everywhere and using my blog like an online business card!

Hope this helps...

I do this with my startup - Human Software. I basically sell my application called Prospect, a recruitment app, on our website.

On another page, I list services I do on a consultancy basis.

The goal of most agencies has to be to make a product right, with the eventual expectation that you'll be able one day to focus full-time on product.

Not trying to promote myself but the link in my sig is what I use as a Digital Portfolio/Business Card. It is a work in progress as I have just relaunched it over a week ago after falling into freelance after working for 5 years in an agency.

I will be blogging, spending time in forums, job boards for clients with hopefully the future holding word of mouth and my credentials to be seen as a quality freelance worker in my line of work.

In your case I would go about blogging, guest blogging, active in forums etc and show off your agencies portfolio/website. I wouldn't use clients details or jobs as examples unless I had permission and also I wouldn't want to give to much away so maybe a sample of the work you did for a client for example.

Sorry this doesn't answer you question but asks one. Why?

Why would you NOT focus all the marketing on one or the other,( either you are a freelancer or your a developing and agency business, surely)?

I'm assuming by the wording the agency is yours and you are not an employee wanting to do a bit of freelancing on the side.

    Yeah good question actually.

    I have a personal website danielsecondname.com and notrealdomainseo.com

One is my personal website where I blog on industry / my professional life ect and the other is my "agency" well a freelance website for which I trade as.

How would you seperate the two?

In a freelance business or any business starting up, the owner is the personality of the business. The owner is the brand , people buy you!

If both websites have the same personality, brand, culture it seems totally pointless to duplicate the effort, for nothing other than 1 more site.

The costs of maintaining and supporting 2 should surely be the yardstick !

Don't make the mistake in assuming its only "my time", as a business owner this is the most expensive time you have
