I have a financial services business that focuses on helping people ensure they are managing their tax situation effectively, release funds from their pension as well as looking at alternative investments. I am looking for ways to market the business and would be interested in suggestions. I appreciate it is an extremely competitive sector and I dont have a massive marketing budget so how can I compete?

If you have a website, get it SEO'd and pointed at the search engines.
If you don't have a website, get one.

Then:
Short term - go for PPC via Adwords. Also do the whole local advertising via leaflets, ads, networking meetings etc if you're looking locally as well.

Long term - pay a specialist to create and (If money is available) manage a SE marketing plan, you know link building etc.

Cost = piece of string:
All depends on your funds, a webste will cost you a few hundred for something light. PPC will cost you what you want to spend, and the SEO marketing plan, will be from a few hundred up a month depending on what you want doing.

Morning!

Speaking from personal experience, when I was trying to find some assistance with my own tax return I searched the industry websites for qualified and recommended accountants who could assist. I'm not sure how you get onto these databases, but this might be worth looking into. I was specifically interested in someone local and this was the easiest way I found them.

Adding your website to other directories might also be helpful - Yell, Thompson etc etc.

Besides this, I would totally agree with the post from Baz above - I wouldn't have contacted anyone without a website anyway, so this would be my starting point.

All the best.

I reckon it's all about the networking for you.. Join as many local networking groups as possible. There are usually at least 10 in any geographical area, often breakfast and lunchtime meetings. It will be a slow burn but will get you there in the end.

I certainly agree with Telemax on the Networking. Personally i am not a fan of, nor do i recommend any networking opportunity that you have to pay for, but if needs must.

I would say that you need a basic website to act as an on-line brochure, but spending money trying to compete with the established businesses with either SEO or PPC will see you skint in no time. The only way I could see these being beneficial would be after a lot of research into very niche targets, and a plan for hitting a few carefully selected long tails.
