Marketing a free ads site.

I was under the impression that free ad sites normally catering for everything - look at gumtree?

I cant think of a niche that would really stand out, how is it going to make money? How will you attract visitors?

If its only niche then not that many people will be interested and therefore already cutting down your target audience.

What age and sex is your target audience?

If it is a niche then you are lucky you can clearly define your market.
All you need to do is to understand what holds them together as that niche and you are likely to find there is already a place to market...

Golfers - magazines / clubs / forums etc.
Mothers with primary school children - through the schools
Gaming fanatics - websites / magazines / gaming stores etc.

i.e. there is already something defining them as that niche - use that as your platform

If its fishing - same with a fishing shop!

I am looking to launch a free ads site in a niche. Its a long term project with a small budget.

how would you best advise to market such a site?
Hmm, why is it completely free? You could introduce a platform where people pay even if it is £1; people can earn referring others etc. Gumtree has free and paid sections. Personally I tend to avoid places that do not support the flow of money...there are alot of free classifieds around and spam.

Marketing and advertsing. You could introduce a referral system, link exchanges to get it off the ground. You can also sign up for a paid UKBF membership and raise awarness of your project; as there are quite alof of members and visitors browsing this forum daily. Whatever you do, do it well.:)

Whatever you do - DO NOT use the word 'Free' in your domain name - bcos once you label yourself as FREE, you can't change it without losing any links and promotional work and it limits what you can make.

I did that once and badly regretted it :(

By all means offering something for free is good, just have some nice paid options as well.

I have worked for a couple of the largest classifieds sites in the UK if not Europe in my niche.

I would say the SEO is the easy bit, it is getting the content on the site that is the hard work.

I am involved with a start-up classifieds site at the moment and it has taken about 6 months to get it up the SERPs and now we have people placing adverts on it.

Drop me a PM if you like.

Cheers

I would start by going to where the niche has contact with each other. e,g, forums online, or magazines, clubs etc offline. Then start building a list of your niche. The alternative is purchasing a quality list with targeted demographics and geographic to increase the effectiveness of your marketing. It is hard to be specific when it is "TOP SECRET"
