Market Stall Ideas

My daughter would like to set up her own market stall, selling clothing. I used to love the hustle and bustle of our local market but today it is a mere shadow of its former self, about a third of the size it used to be.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were about markets nowadays. She wants to go to a couple of local ones throughout the week and a big one on a Sunday. What sells well on markets? Are the Sunday markets still popular?

I would have thought that people still love the markets as times are a little harder now, picking a bargain or two up at the market sounds appealing.

Any thoughts, ideas or general statements about markets and what works well would be greatly appreciated!

I know someone who buys pallets from a local wholesaler. He buys a leads pallet (everything is £1) and he just sells everything on there between £2-£5. The pallet includes items such as aerials, remote controls, scart leads, HDMI cables, batteries etc. All from Comet.

He also buys House phones from the same place. They work out at £6 each but some dont work, so its a case of sorting through them and taking parts from each sets to make up some good working sets etc, and then he sells them for £10,£20,£30 and £40 depending on how many phones there are.

I also used to know someone who bought clothing by the bag. Jumpers and jeans etc and used to sell them dirt cheap but turned over high quantities.

They both seemed to do quite well, but also had stock they couldn't sell, which reduced their profit margins. Any ideas on how to sell the remaining stock? Pallet it up and put it on eBay?

Most markets are in decline, there is no particular line that sells well on a market, it is more looking at the markets she intends to sell on and trying to see an opportunity, what is missing from those markets.

If there are ten stalls selling wellington boots why become number 11?

Where are you based? With fuel costs so high I doubt you would want to travel to far these days.

Very good point about the travelling costs. She has also been looking at job lots of candles, and vases etc, and having that type of stall. There is pretty decent markup on that line. Been told that you can treble your cost price with most items.
