Manufacturing and selling supplements

Hello,

I am in the process of starting a new supplement business. Manufacturing and selling things on the lines of weight loss and muscle gain products.

I would like to know what are the rules and regulations towards supplements. Are they the same as general food?

I have rented a commercial kitchen recently to create some prototypes but I am worried there is more to it than just renting a commercial kitchen. The kitchen has had checks from the dept of environmental health but I have heard I need a product and batch number as well. I have also read I may need the correct usage/planning permission to be granted by my local council.

Any help is appreciated,

Thank you WHARTY. I have looked into and contacted the organizations they mention.

vvaannmmaann, I rented the commercial kitchen for a few hours to mix different herbs and ingredients. I haven't sold anything I made on that visit and don't plan to.

You need to comply with the EU Supplements Directive:

If you don't, stores like Holland & Barrett won't stock you.

Are you planning to make ******** weight loss claims preying on people's insecurities?

If so, you probably don't need to worry about EU regulations or complying with the ASA's code of practice.

If you're not, then you do :)

There are manufacturers of these supplements already that could make your product to your standards or indeed could pack their existing product lines into your own label.

Let someone else take care of the regulatory side while to test your business and then perhaps move on later to manufacture.

I am currently dealing with a UK company on a similar project and would be happy to give you the contact if you want to PM me.
