Making a website

1) Find a web host
2) Download and buy Macromedia Dreamweaver
3) study, study, study
4) start small
5) study, read, study, read
6) probably get frustrated
7) end up with something okay...

8) find a friend who knows a friend who knows a friend who design websites
9) buy him/her a meal and a beer and ask for some help

OR

just spend a couple of hundred and get it done properly, rank high in Google and actually make the site work for you.

I mean this in a really nice way!

If you really want to learn it then I would start with Dreamweaver. I use it all the time and make fantastic websites in it. But you can also start with templates and work from there. Read lots of tutorials on the internet and start slowly.
Always think like your visitors. Keep things clear and simple. The less moving things the better. The less fancy the better. But the better looking the better.

Makes any sense?

You just require a simple html coded page to upload her pictures on to and point people to the page on the advertising you do for selling the pictures. S.E.O is going to be irrelevant in this situation so you could get it done quite cheap.

I know all the IT experts on here will probably disagree, but make it yourself and save yourself a fortune. I bought our domain name for £11, pay £15 per quarter to BT for BT Office web hosting, and made my own website which took ages to figure out because I am completely illiterate when it comes to technology but I reckon looks pretty good.
Now I've worked it all out I find it easy to update, add, edit and amend as needed.
Good luck with it!

Building your own site for a shop page or personal site is fine, but when it's for selling goods online, it's better to get it done properly.

There is nothing worse than a website that has numerous errors and looks like a kid has made it, when you're sending them money.

A website is an investment, get it done properly.

There are numerous sites around that you can use to sell your goods (artist based) and you have ebay. Unless you want to spend the big bucks, I would just use a site that does it for you, until you have the funds/ time to get a website built.

Google should find a few sites to get you started (as I know none)

Don't you just get surprised when someone posts up to give advise how they created their website and you could too, only to find that the website they created breaks every single rule in the book. And any visitor would rather click back than use any links or read through the contents...

If you would like this website to appear very neat and attractive then you'll definitely need to find someone who has more knowledge on the subject otherwise don't even bother... You can't just choose to create something professional even out of reading a few online tutorials.

Oh and if you just want something that is just there and running, just to display the images then go ahead and you could read some online tutorials starting here: www.w3schools.com.

Ouch! Assuming that's a dig - in an ideal world we'd all be in a position to pay to get things done properly, sadly the real world isn't always like that and we just have to do the best we can with what's available. And when nothing actually is available we do it ourselves.
I've just checked my site using some of the links provided by a previous post and it seems there are plenty of technical errors which I wasn't aware of, but at the end of the day I still think my website looks OK and it does a least give my customers the opportunity to keep a tab on what's on offer at my shop. ;)And it was very cheap

What you should also take into account is cross browser compatibility issues and accessibility issues (the website may not show correctly or at all in some browsers) which is why its always a good thing to meet W3C standards as it ensures maximum cross browser compatibility and accessibility for all.

Although obviously cost is always going to be a problem I do feel you would be far better off getting it done properly, even in the current climate there is cost effective solutions I could put together.

If you require any more help feel free to ask.

Hi,

This is our first post on the forum & hope it helps you.

My photography website is built using the joomla CMS with extensions, I have used Joomla with various extensions over the past year and had success for various commercial clients, the best thing is it is free to download, although it can some times be complicated the results can be outstanding.

Wordpress also has some excellent features and performs well on google.

If you need any advice on hosting seo etc just pm me.

Please feel free to have a look at my site image47 Photographers in Hull (Still in very early stages) & if you want any advice or guidance, please feel free to contact me.

Regards Wayne
