Mailing list rental

Hi,
Can anyone explain to me how mailing lists are rented out. I've been searching for a few and the going rate seems to be around £120.00/1,000 but I'm a little confused as to how you can manage this list to ensure that it is only used once by the buyer.

Thanks

Most lists and directories etc are seeded with a small number of fake details that go back to the owner of the list/ directory and therefore they can to some degree check if your breaching their T&Cs

You buy for a 1 shot email, they receive one a month via their seeded email address and they know that your breaching the terms.

It is very unlikely that the list will only be used once by the buyer.

This creates a huge burden on the company renting the list, as they need to constantly be generating fresh leads. This is costly.

If you had a list of value, would you rent it and exhaust it to any buyer, anytime. Probably not as this diminishes its value.

A list of value takes time to build and one of better quality even has some form of relationship between the sender and receiver.

I would never sell my mailing list.

For a good quality fresh database of 1000 records, expect to pay about 25p per record.

As mentioned already, lists can be purchased on single or multi-usage licenses and will contain seeds so that it can be tracked to a degree by the list owner.

I dont agree with the quote above as the OP hasnt stated what type of mailing list they require. Certainly for a specific email list this an accurate price, but in my opinion it's way off the mark for a direct mailing list.

3trades is absolutely right in repect of list sales. They are a definate no-no do not go there. There is a difference between rentals and sales however.

List sales dressed up as rentals are just as bad however, so anyone who offers unlimited usage must be viewed warily. Likewise companies that hand over their lists willy nilly to clients also raise a HUGE red flag. Some massive publishing houses do still do this however. Seeded address are great for protecting revenues- but not the email address themselves from being spanked and proving worthless very quickly.

The exception to this rule is some big publishing houses that will release data to specific ESP's/Agencies that have been pre-approved and due to reputation etc you can be cofident will not abuse the data.

On the other hand list rental can be done by not allowing you to get a copy of the email address at all. This is probably the best and safest method in my opinion. SO you have a message you want to send to a list. The list owner gets your message and sends it to the list. You never get a copy of an email address.

In this way the list owner is aware of the quality, suitability etc for their hard earned subscribers.

There is a big difference between list rental and list purchase. List purchase is definately bad.

When googling list rental it sometimes pay to search for "solus newsletter" "solus email" "solus email advertising" which are common industry terms for true list rental opportunities.
