Magento Optimisation

Hi,

I am getting 500 error on one of my website and it is a magento website.
Hosting company says the website needs to be optimized and that's index.php or instal.php files.

Anyone knows how to optimise this and what's it is?

Any input highly appreciated.

Please can you tell me what version you are currently running and if indeed you did just upgrade, what your previous version was

No I haven't upgrade. it's a new website already.. Magento ver. 1.7.0.2

Hosting company say i should optimize the files but i haven't got a clue what that means

I guess you have to rebuilt the index. from Settings and tools.

Magento in its native form can be hugely resource intensive. I'd suggest:

- Hire a pro who can optimise it for you
- Spend time reading the Magento boards and learning about optimisation techniques

Your hosting company may not give you time to do the latter if its a shared environment and affecting other sites on the server.

it may be just a mis-configuration of .htaccess file.

I have these issues appear many times when moving the magento to one installation to another; or if installation or the hosting environment change..


Rebuilding the index will surely solve your problem .. and if not then as matt suggested - Hire a pro

Hosting companies have a tenancy to say this, it will most likely be a combination of hosting configuration and probably ensuring things like compression is enabled etc in the site.

Sometimes memory leaks or slow MySQL queries can cause issues like this.

We have a common configuration we worked out for all our servers and can find it really helps, you would need root access to the server for this to be done.

a 500 error usually leaves a clear explanation in your apache error logs.. post what you find there and it should be easy to diagnose.

Also, check that there is not a file called maintenance.flag in your root folder.. this will trigger a 500 error. These are often left by extensions that have not installed correctly
