Hi All,
I’d really appreciate an answer to this from any developers and any magento store owners. I am concerned about the information being given to us by our developer.
We want to have in place back-ordering functionality in our magento store.
We will be holding some products “in stock” (the standard model). However, in addition to this, we also want to work using this back ordering functionality. We want to be able to list quite large product catalogues for some suppliers (e.g. hundreds of products, or perhaps thousands), where most of these products are NOT held in stock.
The website will need to tell the user how many days until expected dispatch of each product (decending every day of course). Every week or two weeks, we will send through a collated order to our supplier.
The idea here of course is that we can offer a huge range of products, but (aside from our main "in-stock" inventory) only pay for stock that we need, after we’ve received payment from a customer (though of course based on order info as well as other research we will stock popular products to offer speedier dispatch). It will also give us useful information based on orders and page visits, to help us organise our actual held stock.
Our current developer has said that this is special and bespoke functionality, and it will take 10-12 hours of developer time to put this in place. However, someone else has just spoke to me, who sounds very knowledgeable, who says it is standard magento functionality, that might just require an extension or two depending on exactly how it is done.
Can anyone shed any light on this??
