Magazines

Hi,

Just want to say thank you to everyone who's taken the time to answer my previous post. Much appreciated.

The magazine will be a mixture of ads and articles, as I feel that will get consumers interest more than just a magazine full of ads with no useful contents.

But how do I then tell prospective advertisers than I'm here come advertise in my magazine. Do I print some flyers or send them sales letter?

How about the people who'll be interested in providing me some stories or useful tip as articles...do I charge them? I mean if it advertising their product then I'll have to charge them something?

Some advice please.:(

I've got the basics sorted out but then its the next step.

Thank you

I can't help you with attracting advertisers I'm afraid (all of the publications I've worked on have used telesales to attract advertisers - I'm not sure if you want to do that, though), but as far as articles go...

You seem to be thinking about using two different types of articles:

1. Articles which are thinly-veiled (and sometimes not-so-thinly veiled) adverts for people's businesses. These are known in the industry as "advertorials", and the person providing them has to pay for the space as this type of content doesn't really add anything to your publication, unlike "real" articles.

2. Editorial - i.e. articles, features, interviews, reviews etc which will be of interest to the target audience of the publication. This is the kind of content that you will have to pay for, but it's WORTH paying for, because it's the content which will ultimately sell your magazine.

Hope this helps a little. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, and, of course, if you're looking for writers, please feel free to check out the link in my sig ;)

Hi Rocklinks,

Thank you for your reply. I thought of doing that in my plan but then instead I would offer low intro rates for ad space instead so I won't be out of pocket. I know that the magazine will have a strong ground and marketability as it is what its needed in the area - its just waiting to be produced, besides my rates will be much lower than other local newspaper.

Amber,

Thanks for great advice. I've checked your site and I went to check the Open project section, is it free to post is just I couldnt see any link to post new topics. How about if I found a writer or articles that I want would I then need to pay you some fee?

My project is a small concern therefore limited budget I don't think I will be able to afford to use journalist and writers services regularly.

Regards.

Anyone knows how I should approach advertisers? Do I get some flyer or dummy magazine printed for them to see or send them Sales letter?

Would be grateful for some advice. :(

Hi Ann,

If you look at the contents bar on the left side of the page you will see a section headed "employers" and a link under that which says "post your project".

It's absolutely free to join up and post a project. If you do find a writer using the service, you're charged a very modest £1.10 :)

Thank you,

Rocklinks - I will do once the mag is ready, just planning stage.

Amber,

The price are in US dollar? Is that per article or per project?

If anyone here work with Publisher software, how do I work on the design to scale, I mean how do I know that the design I'm working on is going to fit exactly as to how I laid out on the screen - e.g all word and images to fit an A5 size. How do I adjust the on screen page/lay out to the exact dimension of the magazine?

Thank you.

Ann

Thank you for your mail Amber - but can't get the link to work.

Thanks to all your post here .

I'm playing around with the publisher - never used it before but looks good.

Ok if I have an A5 mag to design - how do I set the on screen page to make that it is to scale - so what I see on screen is what I get on print.

I noticed once you've created the page, it has a frame within the actual magazine layout - what measurement should I set the frame to be?

Any help please :(
Thank you.

Hi Ann

To create the magazine as you want it to look Select File then Page Setup and choose booklet. This will give you a double page spread apart from the first and last pages.

To view without the guide lines go File, Print Preview and click once on the document and it will enlarge to 100%. Click again and it will reduce to the original screen size.

If you need further advice, please PM me and we can go through it on an internet messenger service.
