Made redundant - Started for new employer but how does it look?

hi,

I was made redundant from my old employer in January, and started working with another company last month. (same industry for those whom remember me.. UPVC).

Now this current employer doesn't have a lot of business as it's family ran now, however when I was with my other, they asked do we deal in casement windows, of coruce I said no as it was only VS.

However, now I am dealing with casements, and people are continuously coming up to me and asking me to quote up some replacement windows for them.. Now the question will be, would it look bad if I start getting quotes with this employer about the casements and start bringing in more business for them? (I won't be making a commission I assume..)

and I am only factory worker, not sales staff.. Would I be sacked for bringing in sales?

Their is a lot of people asking me to quote up for them at the moment, 3 or 4 a week are asking...

Thanks.

I shouldn't think so personally. As a business owner myself I would expect my employees to know the company inside and out well enough to help any customer query weather that would be to deal with it themselves or forward them onto the right person. If you're simply turning them away that's worse than taking sales in. If you're not sure then put this to your employers or ask them what you should be telling these possible customers as you cannot just let money walk like that so they should know that this is an issue.

Why assume you won't make comission ? most companies offer some comission on new sales introduced to the business.

I would approach the business owners and first ask them if it's ok for you to bring sales in and if/what they may be willing to offer for any new business you can get.

If you just pass the leads to the sales team generally they will be making comission so usually it will be split between you and them, which is pretty fair and means the business owners don't pay out any more than they usually do.

You can only give a quote if you have the company's authority to commit them to quotes.
Surely you could refer the enquiries to a salesman / sales department and earn recognition for your contribution to the company.

Why not put together a proposal to show you can help the company and present to them.
That way you will be seen to be above board, and you will have the authority they give you as a result.

You are not 'only a factory worker' you are a company employee who is currently working as a factory worker, but who has vision and motivation to do more, I wish you opportunity and recognition.

just a quick update; i started pulling in some quotes from people; and the company has recognized this as i have successfully brought in 4 orders extra since posting this thread, the company has allowed me to add-on extra onto what they've put in. example;

the company quoted £1350 + vat
I quoted the customers £1600 + the labour of fitting them (because I do not have a VAT number) total; £2,300 total. so a nice and tidy £680 in my pocket plus £100 for commission. so I'd say I am quite pleased.
