By Lotus, do you mean Lotus Notes?

If yes, then, Lotus worked on file based approach for storing data. Everything would be a file, and you can add/remove properties from newly created files. Hence, it makes the architecture inconsistent.

Somewhere similar approach is google's big table, or nosql, or windows azure table. They store everything as entity, and each entity can have more/less properties. And is used mainly for scaling.
