Im after a program/software that can be used on a website which would allow peope to create a members profile and set up an information page about themselves for others to view.

Ideally the member can choose a category for their page to be displayed under so it can be easily searched for.

Im guessing this is vaguly little bit like a business directory but not.

Any recomendations on free or paid for software would be appreciated

I'm afraid there is no such software. All the CMS(s) listed above can't offer that. What the OP wants is a system where a member registers and fills in information about him/herself to create a profile. Then the member be able to have an area or pages about herself on the website, which is an automatic process. No scripting software/CMS can do that.

Using a CMS will be a waste of time and/ money unless you have one built specially for that task. So I think you should look for a website programmer/developer.

The task you're trying to do is actually very simple. It's just a matter of having many templates designed related to the subject and making instances of those templates for each new member depending on the template they choose, and save to their assigned folder or area. Then filling in their information. (All done automatically on the server).

Categorising will be a very simple programming task as well.

I'm actually offering free website and print design at the moment. But this seems like a very large project. Could give us more infor about the website. Perhaps I might be able to help. You can contact me here. You might find me available online.

You could try modifying wordpress or phpbb to do what you need.

They already have the infrastructure there - all you'd need to do is extend the profile pages in these apps and you're good to go. Naturally you'd need to hide the core functionality (blog and forum respectively) of each app but email, permissions, members list, etc would all be there for you.

If you would like a custom one built for you we can help. It would be more expensive than the off-the-shelf ones which are great if you are on a tight budget. But if this is something that needs to be done perfectly rather than cheaply let me know.

If open source is best for you then Joomla is very good but complicated and wordpress is lovely and easy to use but very limited (its a blogging program not a website creation program).

HTH :)

Custom is always better but often, people not in the applications development industry can't understand why they cost so much and take so long to do.

Customization of an existing CMS is not the right solution to this. No website development company will be willing to do this besides offering a complete website or having a special CMS built. WordPress would be the nearest solution to the problem, In fact MU-Wordpress but this handles the database in a very different way and complexed way. It might take a lot of time and money to customize just that. Also using MU-Wordpress will use up a lot of space and won't be able to handle all the traffic. Too much blog based contents and not great.

Joomla is great for creating websites but still far from what you're trying to archive. Unless you'll be offering a Joomla installation for each new member. Too much space wastage as well and extra contents.

Forum CMS are far from this, they won't help either.

I would disagree. I'd say most CMS have these features. It's just not the core functionality.

I'm sorry but that sounds like an awful idea.

Just an idea, isn't David?

Of course you could use a single template for all the members for each template instead of coping and make the contents database driven.

Now I would love to see a programmer taking on this project by editing an existing CMS. I'm not saying it's not possible. But the time and hard work besides making something that's unique for just that purpose.

Most CMS have all these features. But you couldn't base the all project around that CMS concept. Of course the scripts are there and it'll make the project much faster by borrowing some of the scripts from a CMS.

But going back to the OP's question. I doubt she'll be able to use just a MU-Wordpress or phpbb installation to achieve what she wants, even by making a few adjustments. This would require someone with a greater knowledge of the CMS being modified. She was searching for a software/program which could offer the full concept. And there is no CMS capable of offering that without making further adjustments which will probably cost a lot of money.
