Long Domain Names

Other than customer spelling, is there any disadvantage to having a 14 letter domain name, or should I really be striving for a much shorter one?

I'd advise against it if possible.

WebHostingBuzz is 14 characters long. As a result, we get people shortening it to 'WHB' and we don't own WHB.com, despite much trying. We probably lose a bit of brand traffic to this and we are an established brand.

For a new brand in this day and age it's going to be an uphill struggle, depending on your expected traffic sources.

Just don't make the same mistake as me. Buying a long keyword rich domain name that was too long to use on adwords.

Most of my domains are long but i go for organic traffic.

If you're trying to create a catchy brand then you would really want one word or two, not three or four or five.

Thanks. It's so difficult to choose good domain names (as all the decent ones are taken but not used).

I've just bought www.bathmonster.co.uk. That's pretty memorable, right (and only 11 letters).

Nice domain, and definitely memorable. You should use the monster element to create branding (a friendly monster to help you choose a bath?)

It's tough because nowadays it's tough to get a domain name you want which is either one word, short or just two words that you specifically want.

I have sites which are long (14 plus), short and even mashups of two words - I haven't noticed or had any feedback about remembering it. All you need to do is create a marketable brand around a name and market it - bathmonster is a great domain.

I probably would advice against anything over 15 characters for a domain name unless it is extremely marketable.

I guess Google's SEO advice, generally don't do anything for SEO that doesn't help users, would be the reason that they now prefer shorter domain names. So much easier to remember, type, give out over the phone or via any medium and even more important when it comes to email addresses that are used regularly. So bathmonster is rather good!

Go for as short and memorable as possible.

Agree. Short is better but long and pronounceable is still ok. (We had to go long as short version owner wanted too much. (Our name is three compound words which read quite nicely)
