Howdy,

I am doing a bit of research on something for someone (suitably vague!! :) )and thought that I could get honest and valued opinions from this forum......

Please choose an option for the poll, and post any thoughts you have in this thread.

Basically, I am trying to find out if businesses outside of London, feel that they have a tougher time starting up, and less support going forward than those in London?

To all you start ups and SME's on this forum from London, please don't take offense, I know you may say that it is probably harder in London as there are so many start up's and SME's about.

Two things to remember:
1. Don't shoot the messenger; and,
2. Don't shoot the messenger

Mmmm, not wanting to be difficult but, How would one know unless one had started a business both in and outside of London ?

Having said that I suspect it is harder outside London. Actually I think maybe there are so many variables involved that it probably makes no difference in general.

ttfn.

Andy,

Good point....
I think people's perception is important as well, as in:
1. Do start up and SME's outside of London feel that that there are more opportunities in London, i.e in terms of business support, easier to raise finance if you are based in London and;
2. Do people beleive that starting your business in London lends more credibility to the business?

I know its tricky one, just trying to get people's thoughts.

Based in Wales, however, client based certainly not, Londoners do have edge, as we have less then 3 Million people in Wales for example, so, we have less local markets.

I think as well perhaps why London big on Networks, our Networks can tend to see same people, more often than not, doing the circuit….we have 146,000 businesses, roughly 98,000 of these are micro…

But do agree with other posting, alot down to , ‘ opportunities’, as Richest man in the World at one time, lived in Wales, Cardiff, and, very first £1 Million cheque was written out, Cardiff Bay, docks,.

Wealth due to the coal, and, the Marquis of Bute, owned mines, much of docks, road, had rather monopoly, bit like Bill Gates today. Cardiff was busiest port in the world in its day. Similar to modern Kuwait, Cardiff housed some of the richest men in the world, exporting coal rather than oil. Lots of opportunities created locally…

But, I do think that London businesses has an edge, hub with financial sector, corporate locating there, create employment, in turn they spend money, creating opportunities for businesses, start-ups etc, you have the tourist industry, multi-cultural aspects. More businesses there I believe than elsewhere, Wales starts from one of the lowest around the country..…

Also, edge, as if you worked in a bank, in London , I think that there would be an assumption by many, that more high powered, clients etc, London, than Cardiff, and be good start if you came out and started up in business to have London profile behind you, …so would say advantages in that respect….certainly…….perception of high powered…

Saying that, costs higher, competition can be fierce, so you have that to contend with..,

With assistance, support, we have millions being poured into new start-ups here, Wales, etc, alot money , typically wasted, by government agencies, but, there are odd ones, initiatives that is nearly good value for money,

Speak to many businesses around the UK, concerning support, and considering the £Billions designated each year for businesses, it is far from good, and, should not be that £140 Million will go back in unclaimed business grants in regions, because over 80% of Uk businesses do not apply, or know about them....

Has government agencies never heard of buying list of UK businesses, and sending it out to them. Would save on fancy events etc,

One initiative, by DTI , or Trade UK, assists developers from India to come over here, and sell their "IT development services", I must question this, because it is up to the Indian government to assist their businesses, and, most Indian companies can market to the UK anyway. I have no problem with out-sourcing, I do.

I also question £120, 000 grant you can get to send employee to Japan, ....... sure many could do with little help on their home front, but practical assistance, support....
