LinkedIn

I have just signed up for this site today and I am starting to create a profile. Does anyone have any hints or tips on using the site to its full potential, or pitfalls to avoid?

Thanks.

It is really easy - you just type in what you are looking for in the search box, you are then given a filter search box which given you more options to search.

I normally search by location rather than business type - but then it would depend on your business you may find it more beneficial to filter in another way.

You can also start your own group to assist in building your credibility in your market.

Use the Q & As, by answering questions/queries again to establish your credibility.

Don't accept connection requests from just any one. You'll find people out there who just want a large number of connections, supposedly to impress other users. I just ignore or for fun I send them a message asking why they want to connect with me and what benefit I'll get back.

I find it to be a useful tool.

I see, that sounds interesting. Some of the groups are strange to view, "The Official Group for White House Members of Staff" nothing better to do with their time eh :p

I thought there might be a bit of that going on, what happens if I try and add someone not in my network? Also, are you paid memebrs?

If you start your own group I don't think you can just add anyone - I think they have to 'opt in'. At least I've not seen a way of doing it on my group (Small Business Success Entrepreneurs).

No, I'm not a paid member, not sure if worth doing that - but not sure what benefits it brings - any one with experience of this, would be useful to know.

Great advice already.

i second all the advice provided. Especially using the Q&A and the advice about not just connecting with anyone.

Also use it as an opportunity to also reconnect with people you've worked with in the past, as well as making new connections. Perhaps this could lead to new opportunities for you and them. Plus you could write recommendations and request recommendations (references). Plus once you've connected with an old colleague or business contact, send them a message asap.

You can also have twitter updates routed to your linkedin account. Though make sure your updates on LinkedIN are relevant and of interest to your network. I believe there is a ukbf group on linkedin you can join as well.

Make sure your profile is setup to allow ease of communication. It's one thing to have messages via linkedin, but providing business telephone numbers, website links, skype details etc can help make a difference.

I'm not a paid member on linkedin either and doubt I will ever be. Linkedin is a great service with a lot of features. Hope you enjoy it.

You can request someone be added to your network - if they have said something which interests you, add them and let them know. It's all about creating connections.

I see LinkedIn as a business to business network, allowing you to get in touch with other businesses and to follow companies. This, of course, can work for marketing or for collaborations. I use a tone though which is quite business like for LinkedIn.

Facebook I see as a business to public forum, and Twitter as a mixture of B2B and B2C.
