Limited company name advice

Hello all, we are starting a new company and are searching for a suitable name. Would appreciate some advice on these points:
1. Can/should we use a name of a company that has been liquidated/struck off? Could this lead to problems with credit checks/searches etc in future or would the new company start afresh?
2. Can/should we use a name that is registered overseas, but not in the UK?
3. Any other advice on names?
Thanks!

    1) Shouldn't be a problem as the company number will be different.
    2) Doesn't matter, unless its a brand or well known name and likely to cause confusion or legal issues.
    3) It doesn't really matter what the company name is.

    This. Especially no. 3.

I mean, don't call it OurStuffIsCrap Ltd. but otherwise, it doesn't matter.

So @WaveJumper has given you one idea and nothing wrong with that, albeit it’s a bit typical and boring. Also in searches you will come after ABS Property Holdings.

It depends on the business and type of clients you expect to have. It is also good for Google Searches that your name reflects what you do.

Not sure what “Property Holdings” means. Do you buy them to rent out, sell them, maintain them?

The other thing to watch is where you might grow. For example, my wife and I set up a gift shop in our town. She did some research and we settled on All About Gifts. It has been great and we are top of all listings. However, we have become the local home for Home Fragrance, we started selling golf accessories. So the name is not perfect now and had we realised this we may have come up with something different.

Hi Trevor, we intend to buy and sell properties, however, may end up letting them out as an alternative. We did not want to restrict the name to one type of business though, hence thought we would go for something holdings, as opposed to something homes, property etc. what do you think ? thanks

Personally I think you are worrying about the wrong thing.

We don't know what your marketing strategy is, so can't really know whether the company or brand name are remotely significant. In about 80% of cases, they aren't.

My brand name is hugely significant, the limited company name is so generic it's worthless - which doesn't matter.

I'd not have the words property or holdings in the company name.

CeebeeSum Ltd is fine. It's generic, means nothing and easy to remember.

CBS might cause a conflict with the umpteen other CBS companies.

My company is named after an enameled nameplate I found in the garden while clearing out undergrowth. It has no relationship with the type of work I do.

Another reason to be generic is it doesn't restrict the type of business you do.

For example, if you decide to start doing building management or maintenance 'property holdings' doesn’t really work any more.

which means 'naughty cat'. About the only relevance to what I do is when one of the cats decides to do some typing which can be annoying.
