Hi all,

I was wondering what people thought is the better of these two options.

After a customer checks out they are returned back to a thankyou page on my site. At this point i can either try to get them to click a like button, which will like the url of my main domain, or i can get the to like my facebook page, and potentially input into their newsfeed in the future.

currently, i am asking them to like my facebook page, but wondered if liking my website might have a better seo return as it is directly associated with my website.

any thought?

If you think about it, getting more fans for the FB fanpage and directly liking(sharing) the website are 2 different things.

Yes, liking(sharing) directly the website is better for SEO, if the profile of the person that likes the website is visible by Google.

Getting fans to the FB page is better for the marketing itself - you can promote products to wider audience and other things.

Depends what you mean by 'better for SEO' - But the number of social likes/followers/shares a website has, will have no direct impact on its search engine rank.

Think about it - if you could get higher in the rankings by getting more likes for your website, you could easily game the results.

Going back to OP question...

Why not do both? Have a button to like you on Facebook, a button to follow you on Twitter, and even connect with you on Google+.

Wouldn't it make more sense to ask your visitors to either like your facebook page or share a page on your website/your homepage on facebook? Or perhaps both as suggested above. I know that some people tend to think that liking and sharing are the same things, but I think you should use these two functions seperately.

Also, if the encouragement to share/like is on the "Thank you" page, it might not be the most ideal page to share (as I haven't seen your website, I obviously don't know if the "thank you" is a pop-up or a modal window which still allows you to see your homepage - in that case, I think it's OK). Anyway, my point is that many users want to visually see or read what they're liking.

If you could throw in links to specific examples, it would a lot easier to help you out here.

It is essential that you have a lot of people that 'like' your Facebook page to give your company more credibility. If people don't know your company well and see that you don't have a lot of facebook likes, this will make a rather bad impression. For SEO purposes it is better that there are people who directly like your website page. I suggest you give your visitors the options to either like your facebook page, your website or both as both 'likes' are important.

Good luck! Tom

I agree with the above in that why make this an either or. Give people a choice.

That said I don't necessarily agree with the 'is essential that you have a lot of people that 'like' your Facebook page to give your company more credibility' part as I've seen many small business' with likes not commensurate with the size of their business, which to me makes a business appear less trustworthy.

I would much rather get a like on a fan page because then you can "hang out" with your customers and interact with them.

One thing I would highlight though is the relative weakness of "likes" as compared to "comments" and "shares".

A facebook "like" is the least powerful method of building a Facebook following. If you can get people to add comments and share content you will see MUCH better results than you would simply by having a "like".

The reason for this is because your company appears higher up in the persons newsfeed with shares and comments.

Websites are now being built with a facebook newsfeed at bottom where people can add comments. This makes the whole interaction much more personal, and is like having a constant stream of testimonials on your website. Plus, you have the added benefit of then appearing high on their newsfeed. It's a win win!

So, get people to "like" you if you want, but to truly utilize facebook you should be encouraging shares and comments :)
