Liability insurance for garden work

Situation - I pay a bloke £60 per day to do gardening work at my home, and he sends someone in with the relevant tools (chainsaw for logging, strimmer etc) to get it done.

I was at home the other day and saw him chucking petrol onto the fire he was making to get rid of the garden waste, and suddenly I got rather nervous.

I'm not sure if the chap I pay has liability insurance. Would I be liable for anything going wrong if he hasn't any? There is no contract between us or anything like that. I have no idea where I stand or what vulnerabilities I have here - but they are very hard grafters so I'm loathe to stop them coming in!
