Hi all,

I have launched a new product based on an idea I had last year that at the time wasn't really available anywhere. Things have changed quite rapidly during 2011 so I have spent a bit of extra time creating what I hope will be an appealing brand.

Please have a look at our website www.slapwatch.co.uk and let me know what you think. Stock is yet to arrive but the samples are looking fantastic!

We have also made a promotional version for Bradford based band Talk To Angels which I think looks very cool! :) We will be giving some of these away for people who come along to gigs.

As always huge thanks to Martin and his team at Full Phat Design for the web design and Open Mind Commerce for their fantastic ecommerce solution! :)

Like the concept and yes its geared to the younger culture.

You have the brand 'Slappies' watches on the website? who came up with the brand name?

If I was going to buy one for a friends teenage daughter I don't know if I would offend the parents!!

Sorry just an observation!

Website looks good!

Thanks. Before I answer why do you think Slappie might be offensive?

Mike tells it like it is

slaphead?

Think he was jesting.

That watch would sell like hot cakes to the trendy rich kids thinking they are "street" or whatever young people call it. I'm only 35 and speak a different language entirely.

You should target, rich but bohemian parts of m'cr and london.

I don't mean this in an offensive way but I suspect that watch would be very popular with the pink pound as well.

Im not a homosexual basher (i'm hetro) but I reckon thaeyd buy it

I think it has quite wide appeal so I hope so Mike.

Hi jAMIE

On first impression / perception it has name association with Slapper, Slappie. Happy slapping (culture with kids with phones video playground fights).

Happy Slappie ( drink connected with cider)

Maybe its just me!

I was going to mention that we drew the line at Slapper! :p

I came up with the brand name and there was consideration of a potential negative connotation. But I decided a pinch of controversy might be a good thing.

We do have a back up plan if it is not well received but personally I don't think it is offensive. Hopefully soon Slappie will just mean those watches you slap on your wrist! :)

You see I hate that sort of comment, because success is all about targetting.
I'll tell you another market those kids who like to think they are like the real ravers of the late 80's early 90s who like to go to pop clubs and wear all day glo stuff.

It was just a general comment. We will be targeting certain demographic types etc but what I mean is I think there are a lot of different areas that we can target.

Thanks. Yeah they do make a slap sound.

Not wanting to put a downer on things, but:

On the up side, that is the only place I have ever seen them :p

I have seen them in a few places now but personally I think our face design is more appealing and I think our domain slapwatch.co.uk will help us to build our brand. In addition we have 10 colours, adults and kids, a quality Japanese watch movement and a funky unique packaging concept. The slappie-sphere, not a great pic but you get the idea.

Thanks Cody!

For some reason i keep associating with robbery as well.

I can imagine gangs of kids going around saying lets go slap somone up for a slappie. not trying to be funyn or anything, but thats whats coming up in my mind. Anyone thats been on the top of a buss in london knows exactly how these yobs work. Happy slapping is not good at all.

Yeah and if he exploited that the guy would be a millionaire.

This is exactly what the big sports clothing companies did- they exploited this entire very sad gangster wannabe culture. All these rappers who sing about rape, and selling drugs and shooting people are covered head to toe in sports wear.

It's not an accident.

Even tho it sounds like slapper that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Better to have people talking about your brand, than never knowing it exists.

Why don't you produce some with no label on them? and just have it on the back of the watch?

Saying that your targeting the low end market at 14.99 so generally logos galore is what they want.

One thing tho, why have you got all these different products for each colour instead of just a drop down menu to choose colour?

No ...

I reckon this has a lot of potential if handle din the right way.

But it is a fashion item so timing is important-make hay whilst the sun shines as they say.

The entire slappy, slapper, happy slapper thing whilst not that palatable is the way to go.

Go out on a friday night in any large town or city and see what people like doing and how they behave.

i have seen women wearing all kinds of slogans on tee shirts gold digger being the more pleasant of them

Now none of this ia my bag but it seems to be what the masses want so give it them

I can definitely see this side of it and I did put a lot of consideration in to it. I think the natural generic name for the watch is a Slap Watch. However, we wanted to create a unique brand which associated with this. Slappie seemed like a good choice because I could imagine young kids saying "have you got a Slappie"? The name is kind of like Snuggie in some ways and that is a massive seller. I don't mean the possible connotation of the name but the way it was derived.

If you look at the FCUK brand it has a cheeky double meaning and it works. I think either way you could make slap related remarks about any Slap Watch. Who wants a slap? Plus as Mike says there are a lot of brands out there directly tapping in to slang or offensive brand themes. We aren't doing it directly but if people choose to make this connection then I don't think it will harm the product. I think it possibly gives it versatile appeal to different segments of people.

That all said I still think many people won't make a happy slapping type connection and will just relate Slappie to the slap on nature of the watch. I quite like the fact that opinion is split on it so far.

WebTrust I set the website out this way so that if someone wants a blue watch for example it can be added to the cart in two clicks. It also sets the colours out nicely, there are 3 different image views for each one so if I had one product with all the colour options in a gallery view it would get very cluttered. It is something that could be changed easily but I am happy with it for now.

Great idea, and I reckon you'll do well but just a small observation from someone who isn't down with the Yoof culture - don't you need a video or something on your site to promote the actual selling point?

I only know how it works as we bought the kids some Disney Snappy bracelet thingies at Christmas!!

Thanks. Yeah we are planning on something that will show fully how it functions! :)

I think the slapwatches Jamie is selling look loads nicer though.
Great website and great product.

Are you able to put your own words on the face for an extra fee?

Thanks Jimmyboy! We are looking in to ways to customise individual watches but for the moment we are only able to offer customisation on larger corporate orders.
