Late RTI

Hello, three questions about PAYE if anyone could kindly help.

I assume that a company cannot pay wages without the RTI submission going in first?

If I look at my PAYE for employers account via HMRC today, and I see zeroes for October's payroll (i.e. one month ago today), should I assume nothing has been filed?

Does the company risk penalties for late filing?

Thanks

    1. should not, rather than cannot

    2. Not necessarily, HMRC can make mistakes, especially on the employer's dashboard! Does your payroll software record if the RTI was filed? Which software do you use?

If you cannot tell from your software you should ring HMRC (8am is a good time as you don't have to wait very long).

    3. If RTI was not filed and this is a one off I would not expect any problem.

Have you just started running payroll, or are you quite experienced?

I'm not running it, I'm paying someone else to do it. I'm concerned that it hasn't been done. I don't have any software and am nervous to use any in case I make a mess.

In that case you can either ring HMRC to find out, or ask your provider if there has been an issue. Always assuming, of course, that your employees earnt enough in October to pay tax or NI - that is the other reason there may be 0 entries in October.

What documentation do you receive from the payroll provider every month? Just payslips or additional documents as well?

Yes, paying your employees must be your priority. Sorting ut your payroll provider comes next! If you want to let me have copies of the last payslips that are complete, I may be able to work out your figures for you.
