Can someone point me in the right direction here please.

About 50% of the time when i turn on my laptop the screen remains black, if i take out the battery and discharge all retained power it will start ok and log in to windows 7

However if i plug in an external monitor, the laptop screen remains black but the external monitor is good to work on.

Graphics card, driver?

It's unlikely to be your graphics card, otherwise the external monitor would not work either. It's more likely your screen that is failing

Have you used the laptop a lot, I mean have you lifted the lid a lot ?

If so one other thing to look at before you go into cost is a simple bare wire. If you are able to get at the connections to the screen you can check for that and simply wrap a bit of tape around it if so. I had this on a laptop with similar issues although that one tended to flash on and off or just stay off.

Are you 100% sure you're starting the laptop and not just resuming it from suspension or hibernation.
i.e. are you turning it off by using the option in the start menu and not pushing the button on the laptop, as often this will put the machine into sleep and not actually turn it off.
Its dependant on the model and set up of course, but I have come across this a few times, pressing the power button will give you the symptoms you've detailed.

Worth checking, as drivers would usually result in bluescreens.
I would also take a look at the event logs to see if it can shed some light on what the system is doing and what actions are being logged.

I tend to find when i shut down i get the problem getting the laptop restarted, a simple lid close normally starts ok.

Thanks for the other replies, i"ll work through them tomorrow and report back.

Trust Malcolm

This is often caused by the ribbon which connects the keyboard section to the screen, you should be able to get a replacement although sometimes the ribbons are permanently attached. You'd have to dismantle to investigate tho'.

Good Luck

Hi Dunrider,
I also had a same problem with my laptop. Every time have to unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot. At last i came to know that graphics card was not working proper at last i changed it. Now my laptop is working properly.

Thanks for this, the depower method you mention is how i currently get the laptop to work if i have to use the laptop screen. Otherwise i rely on the external screen.

Just need to commit myself and take the laptop apart to see if i can get away with replacing the ribbon or if i have to get a new screen.

Last time I fixed a similar issue for someone it was the small button/switch that shuts down the screen when you close the lid!
One minute with a q-tip to remove gunge, the button popped up and all was well. That was a few years back an maybe newer laptops have a more esoteric system, but worth a look.
