Anyone check out the link I dropped?!

under £500 gets you

500 GB HD
4 GB RAM
2.2ghz dual core processor
17" HD screen
512 MB graphics
9 hour battery life
Windows 7

I have one and it is awesome.

Within reason the bigger the machine the more you get for your money, or you get the same overall spec as a smaller machine but at lower cost.

Personally i find the idea of a 17" screen on a laptop rather defeatist, i use my netbook at home with a 10.1" screen and its big enough for 90% of stuff, above that a 13.3/14" laptop will suffice :)

I would recomend a mac book if your finances let you and boot camp windows xp if you need to run windows programs, i personally use a windows system for most business stuff as some of the software i need is windows only and i managed to get a free laptop so use it :) the macbook for all personal use plus photoshopping business images and sorting out websites ect. its a much better computer and much more reliable but if you need to keep costs down then windows 7 isn't as bad as its older brothers. after apple i prefer dell for desktops and toshiba for laptops. the satalite range are a good entry level laptop and are pretty affordable, go to www.pcwb.com and see what they have on offer :)

Don't avoid Dell, their products are far superior as is their support.

If you can afford a Macbook, definitely get one, if not just because they're cool!!

Really though, we need to know its intended use!!

No seriously, seriously, seriously avoid Dell. I thought my experience was unique but it turns it that it is far from it. I just got rid of a 2 year old m1530 xps which fortunately I took out 3 year next business day cover on. In the 2 years I had it, it had a new motherboard, a new screen, new memory and a new hard drive. It always ran fairly hot which I suspect is the issue. When i spoke to a friend his girlfriend works for a local county council and they had a number m1330 and m1530s, six of which had failed within a year. He himself had an older generation inspiron which has had a number of component parts replaced.

If you go online and look for problems with inspirons you will see a large number of people with all sorts of issues. I agree I found the support pretty good but the product itself was poor, that may be different now I dont know.

Don't avoid Dell.

They have amazing customer service and their products, while prone to faults, always get repaired.

My WiFi wasn't working so they sent someone round next day to fix it. For free! (The laptop I posted has a 3 year warrenty)

As for OS.

Mac OS is inferior to windows 7 in every way.

And in a little while Chrome OS will be available. Infact the beta is out now, but you need to install it in linux then manually yourself.

Laptops always run warm-hot so you gotta be sensible. Always put it on a hard surface like a table, or a big hardback book.

PUtting it on your bed, sofa or lap is a really stupid idea!

OK lets agree to disagree, you think Dell is great I think they're crap!

OS X is not inferior at all, Win7 (in my experience) is still prone to fundamental flaws that existing in Vista that I had hoped were banished.

This is utter rubbish, i'm not an apple fanboy as i use both platforms and accept that win7 is a good system and better than its predecessors but it's no match to osx for usablilty and reliabilty, and speed... i use it because i have to as certain software i need is windows only but this is the only reason. and maybe dell do have great customer service when your wifi breaks, the thing is apples hardware is perfectly matched to the software so very rarly do things go wrong.

In my experience W7 is faster.

Is your hardware suitable for W7?

Computer manufacturers do have a habit of putting power hungry software on wimpy machines!

Would be good to see a stark comparison of Win 7 and OSx

And before we get onto the virus topic; once Mac's make up MORE of the total number of computers hackers will turn their full attention to hacking Macs. Until then they wont bother as its worth more the hack windows.

To date I've not had an issue with my OS or Laptop, apart from the WiFi breaking (but that was my fault)

Previous Dell laptop, graphics card broke and the motherboard failed. Both replaced within 2 days for free.

Got annoyed when the battery died and they wanted £150 for a new one. So I just used it without a battery :D

Hi,

I have a couple of Dell laptops and a Sony laptop. Since I bought a Macbook Pro, I stopped using them because they just felt really old fashioned.

I ended up with two Macbook Pro's due to a milkshake incident (don't ask) and the only problem I would comment on is the poor battery life.

I believe the standard Macbook is much better on battery than the Macbook pro because ht processor/power-drain is less.

If you only need a laptop for email/internet browsing then you could look at an ipad. I bought one a Month ago and since then have never needed to use my laptops.

I don't understand people here who say things like 'avoid apple' etc because I don't think many are Apple users and therefore have no basis for comparison. For me, I would not even entertain the idea of a PC again, not in a million years!
