We're taking out fulfilment of our ecommerce orders back in house again due to increased fees of our external fulfilment house.

I am tearing my hair out here trying to calculate if the current warehouse space is big enough and how much racking I need.

100 pallets
standard pallet 1 x 1.2m x 1 m H

Warehouse dimensions are 23.17 m long , 8.8 m width, 4.21 height.

I understand I need longspan racking. Can anybody advise?

Rapid Racking.

Give them a call, they will not only supply but will help and advise and can design the layout/needs of the space too all for free.

We've used their stuff for the last 20 odd years and its excellent quality, far far better than some of the other rather flimsy stuff on the market.

Roughly, given your figures:

@4.21m High you can only rack 3 pallets high allowing for beam thickness & clearance.
You haven't mentioned pallet weights which could come into it if your product is particularly heavy.

Using fairly standard 2.7m beams that means you can get 6 pallets per bay.
100/6 = 17 bays required
So @ 23.17m Length you will only fit 8 bays/48 pallets in a run (assuming you can use the full length).
That means you'll get 96 pallets in 2 runs.

Allowing 1.2m racking depth for each run then you'll have a 6.4m aisle to work in. Then, down to what forklift you have, tine length, the turning circle etc. if you can turn your forklift in c.2.6m aisle you may get 3 runs (144 pallets).

This is a rough guide but to me, a warehouse owner, it looks feasible.

Longspan is generally used to refer to hand loaded shelving, you need pallet racking, Link51 & Dexion being amongst the most common.
