Ive been using google tools to search for keywords for myself and its not been brilliant to be honest, so which other site do you recommend?

Im looking for keywords around the party supplies or fancy dress theme. Im looking for something searched for enough to make it worth the effort but not hugely competitive?

Can anyone help and recommend either a tool or some keywords?

If you search for something like 'Halloween fancy dress ideas' then I bet you can guess which sites dominate the results. And no matter what anyone else tells you - you are not going to make a scratch on that.

However, if you search for 'make your own Halloween fancy dress ideas' then you'll get lots of results that you can not only scratch but cause some serious gbh to.

Just take a step either side of the yellow brick road and you'll be surprised what opportunities present themselves.

No - of course they don't - why would they? It's the end of October and people make their own costumes sometimes - obviously they're not going to be searching for ideas, especially not now.

The point is that you have to scrape the barrel and keep scraping it - everyday. The reason why is because you are 5 years behind the 1000 sites in front of you - and they are not going to stand around waiting for you to catch up.

I know what kind of answers you want - but I'm not going to give 'em to you.

Probably not, just like they don't frickin search for handmade cushions either.

I think it's because we're northern you know, nobody wants to do business with us northern folk.

I've been bashing my head against the Google wall for a month and sod all has happened.

Time to get back to old fashion advertising in papers and magazines where people actually read the flippin thing instead of glancing at it on a web page.

My missus doesn't even bother searching on google anymore, she says its full of tripe websites so she just picks out the ones she knows, HMV, Game.co.uk, BBC, ITV, 4OD and thats about it.

Yes, sometimes i look through the results of google and think - why the blooming hell is that there???

are you signed up to Google Webmaster Tools? it's the only one that i know of that has any authority or history and considering Google is going to be your target search engine it seems the best place to focus your attention.

there is a lot of readable info sheets on Google and help for optimising your website.

i'm still struggling with the keyword aspect myself, people type some really random stuff in to google.

........but all that is doing is replicating exactly the words and number of local searches provided by Google Adwords Tool.

Its no better, its exactly the same.

The thing you need to realise is, if you want to know what people search for with Google, then obviously you need to use a Google-based tool as they are the only people who actually know!

Anything not based on google tools is purely guessing (and sometimes google's tools arent much better imo)

Most of the keyword tools use google data anyway...

Had a look at 'fancy dress' and 'party supplies' with our digger software and came up with a bakers dozen, which I'll happily email you in excel 2003 format - pm me an email address. You should check the figures with big G and do your own research to ensure you're happy with the keywords!

Party supplies looks harder, but there seems to be quite a lot of scope in fancy dress. I'm sure there would be plenty more if we dug deeper.

I can't give you the link to the tool we use as it's sold by affiliates only - such links not allowed - and it's unlikely to be economical for someone only using occasionally anyway.

Perhaps I should offer a service just doing keyword research - £1 a keyword

The list i sent to you a few weeks ago are good search volumes,low competition. You do not need more, focus on 3-5 and then ,when you start to rank add in a few more. You have all the information you need, just use it. Content,links,articles, classifieds etc. Build authority consistently.

Thanks, Im working on all the advice ive been given and have a list of keywords now to target through the next 6-12 months.

Im ranking for party supplies in yahoo and bing after a few weeks so thats great - not on the pages id like but not too far off! Just got to concentrate on big G and dragging the others upto a higher position

I'd recommend the following:
Google keyword tool (search for it on google) it's easy to use and gives you a list of keywords related to whatever you put in. Make sure you type in the most general/common keywords in the search box i.e. halloween costumes and then read further down the list to find more specific keywords for your business.
Google Insights- lets you search how popular certain keywords are during certain periods of the month
Market Summari- they offer a 12 day free trial and it's excellent! Cheat a little by searching for their youtube vids- tells you everything

How is it going to be useful to suggest she uses the very keyword tool that she doesnt like & prompted her to post this thread in the first place?

Low hanging fruit - go for the long tail terms, low competition, but also people searching with a clearer idea of what they want and a higher intent level. As you build content for "childrens cat halloween costumes", and you build rankings for that term, slowly you are contributing to the drip drip effect where google starts to build a trust profile for your website and it will help you slowly move up for the shorter tailed higher volume keywords.

It can be easy to rank for long tail keywords with simply one carefully worded page of content, and some decent headers and descriptions. So build up a bundle of long tail terms and work on one a week.

And then look at how your website converts and retains your customers. What you do to keep them there and to bring them back, and to make sure that their next party purchase comes from you rather than them going back to google and searching all over again. You've done all that work to gain a new customer - make sure you treasure them.

Customers coming in on long tail terms tend to stay longer, visit more pages, and spend more. For a new website in competitive market attack those low hanging fruits.

I think as we see the bricks and clicks companies finally pulling their finger out with the web it will have the same impact on small websites as the likes of Tesco has on the high street.

There are just too many poor quality businesses selling online, with too many poor quality websites.
