Keyword spamming!

Hi all,

Ok, im very new to all this SEO stuff, so....

I read in a guide that you should avoid over use of a keyword on your page as it can look like keyword spamming.

I ran my home page through an SEO optimise thingy and that also returned the info that my keyword was used too much.

Checking the page, its used 15 times.

Checking the No1 site ranked on google for the same keyword, I lost count of the amount of times the keyword is used!

Both are ecommerce sites, so the keyword is pretty much unavoidable when talking about the products and product headings etc.

Should I still be looking at reducing my use of keyword or am i misunderstanding all this?

All the best

Steve

If you sold fish, then having the word "fish" on your website front page for instance 15 times would not be keyword spamming, it would probably be unavoidable!

Keyword spamming is more often a problem when the keywords are irrelevant or inappropriate, as often found in Ebay auctions - "as NEW" for a second hand item, or my favourite:
"Fruit machine - NOT laptop computer"
Well thanks for the clarification...:p

Hi all,

Thanks for the info - pretty much as i suspected.

Web SEO - the 'thingy' is an advanced SEO programme that I have written over the course of 4 years - it performs an analysis of the site and then compares it with all the leading sites on the various search engines - it then details what action you need to take to guarantee No 1 placement for the sites keywords - when finished it will retail around £500 but will pretty much be the end of SEO compnies!

Nah - im just joking...

It was Web CEO trial version which i downloaded for free!

Seems very good though.

All the best

Steve

Hi guys,

when looking at keywords on your pages don't fall into the trap of trying to use the same words over and over again - in my experience you need to look at synoyms and thematic related words. You can find relevant ones to your business by going to google and typing ~product and the results will show in bold the word you searched for and then also in bold the words google thinks are most closely associated with it eg: ~cars returns; cars plus also vehicles so a page about cars would be well worth adding the word vehichles into it.

hope this helps

regards

Gareth

For weeks now, my site has dropped down in ranking on Google. One of my competitors have jumped from page 4 to the very first ranking. I was surprised at this and checked out their keyword density for the search term:

Blinds Nottingham
Their result came back with 110 of "blinds" and 59 of "Nottingham". I then wondered how they could make their site so interesting with all these keywords, only to find this text barely seen on its background:

Bradrail Blinds & Awnings in Nottingham and The Midlands Vertical Blinds Roller Blinds Roman Blinds Venetians Blinds Wood Blinds Aluminiumn Blinds Pleated and Conservatory Blinds - Weinor Awnings Partner in Nottingham, in Mansfield, in Derby, in Leicester
Then I scrolled right down to the bottom of the page and found this text - visible (not links), but in very small font:

blinds nottingham nottingham awnings blinds in nottingham blinds in mansfield awnings manfield window blinds nottingham roller blinds nottingham roman blinds nottingham vertical blinds nottingham venetian blinds nottingham wood blinds nottingham pleated blinds nottingham conservatory blinds nottingham bay window nottingham patio awnings nottingham dutch awnings nottingham weinor nottingham blinds midlands blinds manufacturer nottingham blinds direct nottingham blinds installation nottingham perfectfit nottingham perfect fit nottingham outside awnings nottingham remote control nottingham motorised blinds nottingham garden awnings nottingham commerical awnings nottingham blinds awnings nottingham blinds mansfield
Would you say this is a case of spamming to ensure first page ranking on Google? :|

Yeh that's spamming. If it's new spam then perhaps the "new content" gave them a little boost on a temporary basis, but there are still quite a few instances of this kicking about.

If you have a Google webmaster tools account setup you can spam report them - might take a while for something to get done about it though.

Thanks Scott, but I did that weeks ago. Google haven't done anything about it. Perhaps because this company also uses Google Adwords!

Hi There.

I am associated with doing work on the website which i came across your article ... about our website..

I will pm snow girl to let her know as well

I have adapted these technique "even though i didnt realise it would be classified as spamming" throughout information from website that have assisted our listing ... and also from what i have read from various seo sources..

The website is getting revamped anyway .. so this will not be an issue.. but the jump up from the page 4 listing to page 1 ... was due to having multiple domain names bradrail.net and bradrail.co.uk pointing on the same server.. in where we did previously have the number 2 position with applegate...

after reading and speaking i had to alter our .htacess file which regained the position afterwards not after the keyword spamming ..

i have many pages which have valid backlinks some free.. and some of the total 2000 pound spend we have been using with diffrerent directories ...

i can see snow girl point but one of the directories that we used .. used this technique on their site so thought it would be ok to immitate it.. but also at the same time .. we spent 1000 quid with applegate directory .. and it did was push the competition to no 1 and us to no 2.. because the directory has more companies called elite ... in it services ie elite alarms, elite security etc etc...

so we all be hard done be some of google things...

its has taken the best 8 months to get us to the no 1 position .. and a lot of money..

its not like we havent done anything and its all hidden messages

i have to read alot about seo techniques.. i am no expert and i no web developer... but i uphold our position of no 1 based on alot of time money and hard work.. its still not perfect... and every few months we are changing directories and the services once we prove they dont work

hopefully snow girl you will see that it will be more of a fair game ... when the site is redesigned rather than the old one being maintained...

if you did have an issue with this please reply.. or get in contact with us ... we are no ogres ... and if you felt this was an unfair advantage .. we would have been able to chat about it

Like i say we have given the site to an outside source now... which is again costing us, and we will not stop the continue use of third party seo companies and directories, so at the same time i can also justifiy why we have no 1 position and it not directly from keyword spamming

We all make mistakes. However I think you should remove the offending words as soon as possible because being banned from google's listing will probably hurt.

but the jump up from the page 4 listing to page 1 ... was due to having multiple domain names bradrail.net and bradrail.co.uk pointing on the same server.. in where we did previously have the number 2 position with applegate...

I wasn't aware that having multiple domain names pointing towards your main site had any influence on your page ranking.

i have many pages which have valid backlinks some free.. and some of the total 2000 pound spend we have been using with diffrerent directories ...

Well that would have an effect on your page ranking.

i can see snow girl point but one of the directories that we used .. used this technique on their site so thought it would be ok to immitate it..

There will always be other people who use underhand techniques but if you get caught by Google I doubt they would accept that as a valid reason for breaking their rules.

but also at the same time .. we spent 1000 quid with applegate directory ..

Nooooooooo not Applegate!!!!

its has taken the best 8 months to get us to the no 1 position .. and a lot of money..

its not like we havent done anything and its all hidden messages

Even if you hadn't spent a lot of money, I believe the amount of hidden keywords on that homepage would almost certainly give you number 1 ranking.

hopefully snow girl you will see that it will be more of a fair game ... when the site is redesigned rather than the old one being maintained...

When you do remove the keywords (I copied and pasted previously) and your site relies on actual relevant content to maintain its top ranking I will believe that it is fair ;)

so at the same time i can also justifiy why we have no 1 position and it not directly from keyword spamming

I am glad you are looking at the keyword spamming issues. I have heard of several companies who have employed these techniques and been banned from Google's listing altogether and if you rely on customers from the web then this would hit you pretty hard. It's nice to know you actually care about your site and want to follow the rules so that small businesses all have a fair ranking on Google.

Thats not spam that is just a geographical list of areas and products covered by there blind service,so no penalty there provided the text is visible.Earl

I totally disagree. On Google's spam report they ask if the page has "repeated words" which this one has. If you read my original post I stated that there is a whole paragraph of text that is barely visible. You would not even see it if you didn't highlight the text with your cursor.

The second lot of text you have quoted is in tiny font at the bottom of the page with no internal links. So the customer isn't even aware of its presence, how is this of benefit to the reader?

Well snowgirl when a user wants to find a blind fitter in Nottingham who can fit pleated blinds .Then there list is very usefull.

And has been said before having a list of all your products and the area's you cover is of great benefit to the public.

Hence why you are likely to find most of the top ranked site using this method as they probably employ professional SEO's.

You're still not getting it are you?? :|

As I have said several times, the list is in TINY font designed to be hidden, not useful to the customer.

Well I may not get it all ,but I do get that he has been smart enough to include that list that will be picked up by the search engines when one of those key words or phrases is typed in a search engine by his customers.

The size of the text may raise questions in your mind, but certainly not in the SE.

I suggest you do something similar if you don't want to languish on page 4 for eternity.

Maybe employing a professional SEO would be of assistence to you.

If you like to publish your URL I will have a quick look at it for you.

That's ok. I guess I should have clarified that I dropped down a couple of listings, not pages.

Well that would worry me.

Ranking Position Traffic Level
#1 Ranking Position 1
#2 3.5 times less than #1
#3 4.9 times less than #1
#4 6.9 times less than #1
#5 8.5 times less than #1
#6 10.4 times less than #1
#7 12.3 times less than #1
#8 14 times less than #1
#9 14.8 times less than #1 (the worst place to rank on page 1)
#10 14.1 times less than #1
