Can anybody recommend a good book for learning Joomla please?

Also looking for a Joomla reference book - if the 2 could be combined that would be good

At what kind of level?

For absolute beginner there is a relatively new Joomla for Dummies! book, came out Feb this year.

Or in the midrange you have the equally new users guide for 1.6. It really only deals with the latest Joomla though and may miss or not touch on some things that haven't changed.

Or you can go for the Official Joomla Book which is done by contributors to the Joomla source and tries to be a kind of overview of the whole system and why it works the way it does, how you would go about doing Activity X, Y or Z etc.

This is the one I was looking at and thinking it was about right - thanks

I'd go for this. Remember things do change in software in updates etc.
