Jagger 3, you mean Mick Jagger?

M

multilingual

Was anyone following the Google Jagger 3 thread on Webmasterworld yesterday evening? It had over 800 postings in one day, most of which I couldn't understand. I know is about Google updating its systems, but...

They are all talking about doing a trace on Google and seeing updates on SERPS at 66.102.9.99 and 66.102.11.99.

I thought SERPS was the state earnings related pension scheme!

Anyone got a clue what it is all about?

:)

OK, cheers.

do you know what these trace numbers are and why they are significant?

Must have been an important topic to get 800+ replies on one thread, but unfortunately 799 of them went over my head. The only one I understood was a guy right at the end who said 'ok that's enough from me, see you guys later, bye'

Anyway here is a sample if anyone wants to shed some light on this lot:

Would have thought GG would have jumped in over night (well my night) and jumped in if anything significant was happening on 66.102.11.104 & 66.102.9.104 (or .99 as people keep calling it.)

Sorry Dayo_UK, one of the other hats I wear kept me hopping yesterday. It looks like people probably noticed Jagger3 changes at 66.102.9.104, starting yesterday. I believe that data center includes Jagger1, Jagger2, and Jagger3.

66.102.11.99
66.102.9.104
all the new DC's show me my home page and MAJOR subsections now first on a site:www.example.com instead of the random mix u got before.

This is a definite major change. Generally traffix has dropped on my pages although I got an upgrade from 5 -> 6 on the homepage.. :(

Jagger3 Beta-X
Hi Folks

To follow the progress of Jagger3, one can specify the DCs which have shown/ showing the different stages of Jagger3 while its in progress.

We can assume that the following DCs are showing at present Jagger3 Beta-2

66.102.11.99
66.102.11.104

66.102.9.99
66.102.9.104

While previously the following DCs had shown Jagger3 Beta-1 ;-)

216.239.53.99
216.239.57.99
66.102.7.99

What I like most in todays posts is that not so many fellow members are talking about Jagger2 and whether Jagger3 has started or not anymore. IMO, that shall allow us to focus on Jagger3 progress.

What the?

Good luck!

Jagger is the name of the latest Google update, and Jagger3 is the 3rd and final phase of it which is happening right now. Those IP addresses are Google's datacentres (DC's) where you often see changes to search results (SERPS) before they go live. So if you put 66.102.11.104 into your browser you'll see it goes to a Google search page as normal and you can check what your site is doing there to give you an idea of how it might look when the latest update is finished.

It's only really of interest to people who follow this sort of thing as there's nothing you can do about it anyway, though this update Google has actually asked for feedback which is a first.

Gary,

Interesting, and makes a bit more sense now.

However, if you run a trace through command prompt then won't it bring the IP of the Google Data Centre that is live now?

If so, how do these guys get hold of an IP address of a DC that is not yet live?

(Starting to sound like them now!) :(

Hi JB

Google doesn't only use 1 datacentre - they have lots so a tracert's not really going to tell you much that Google won't tell you anyway. Much of the info we get at WebmasterWorld is from Google themselves, mainly through one of their engineers Matt Cutts, though many of these datacentres have been known for a long time.

Been reading quite a lot about Matt Cutts.

He did a bbc interview not so long ago, but unsurprisingly didn't give too much away.

I go on WMW every now and again with postings, but I hardly ever get a reply. Either the questions I am asking are too simple for anyone to bother with, or the regulars stick together and ignore the rest.

I end up spending hours and hours trawling the archives to try and find an answer. I usually give up in the end, but if you want to save me the trouble then:

Plenty of good information on there though.

Whats the bloody point to all that google watching?

sounds like a lot of people with no lives sitting around watching the sun coming up.

worse than trainspotting.

If I ever get that boring you have my permission to pull my ears off with a pair of plyers

My Site Pro newsletter this morning (Nov 9 Issue #711) talked about Jagger and I found it very interesting.

The article was written by W G Moore and expressed the opinion that reciprocal linking was at the end of its life as far as Google page rank ratings were concerned.

If anyone would like me to forward this newsletter to them so they can read the article for themselves, please send an email to [email protected].

Easy to answer those points lads:

Watching the Google listings on different data centres is pointless as it is only the DC that is active NOW that matters. Therefore, the others are of no consequence to people searching the net and no-one knows which data centre will go live next.

Now, if Google told them that DC 66.102.9.104 will be going live on the 15th November, then I can understand SEO guys wanting to jump in early to see how their sites are performing. It would give them a head start on the rest. Then I would agree that this google watching has some comparison to the stock market, ie a real-time, fast reaction environment where quick thinking and staying on top of everything is vital.

But as Google do not tell people this information then this activity serves no purpose at all. I can go to a site now and do a listing check on 48 different Google data centres, but which one do I analyze?

Hopefully you can see where I am coming from :)

We need to watch the weather because hurricane alerts and flood warnings can save lives. We need to look for a bus when we cross the road ecause if not we can be killed.

I don't see the comparison.

The case for the prosecution rests. :)

Actually Google does sometimes say which datacentre the latest changes are going to appear on, and when. 66.102.9.104 was the first DC to have all the latest changes on it and most people were waiting for it thanks to advance warning from Google. It doesn't really serve any purpose though apart from seeing how you've been affected and providing an opportunity for feedback to Google.

I don't see the comparison

Alot of businesses rely on Google too much. If the rankings drop so do sales and in Googles Florida update whole businesses and livelihoods were turned up-side-down. Some people went down the pan.

Google does tell them, therefore your conditional statement equates to true therefore you understand and agree.

Thank you, enjoy your rest. It's been well earned.

As Rob said, the Florida update turned a lot of stuff on it's head, including putting a few businesses under becuase they were silly enough to be dependant on their google rankings.

These SEO people are paid (and paid very well) by clients to stay aead of the curve, to know what is coming from Google so they can take the neccasary steps to ensure their clients continue to benefit from search traffic.

Only difference there is that we can see the real bus coming and so jump out of the way. If it's the Google bus coming to hit us we have to stand there and let it run over us.

JB

No you don't. To continue the analogy...

These guys are further up the road looking at the sizes and shapes of the busses that are coming so they can make changes where you are standing to make sure the bus doesn't hit you (Assuming you are a client). Or if it does then you just get bumped on the head by a wing mirror (which you knew was coming so you donned a crash helmet) rather than flattened or put in hospital for a while.
