Promotion of a killer price on something usually does the trick.

Depends on what you are doing though if its solutions or products.

Try and get some advertising in the local PC Game shops as this is where the hard core for IT products will be then a simple email or letter with a price list for main stream items is a good way to go.

I've given up on my business really, its just getting too difficult for the amount of money I am actually making. I am actually setting up a new business which is web based, and I am in the process of looking for a full time job too.

The problem I found is you need to have a lot of work on to make any money, if you have a lot of work on the stress and the problems with jobs just multiplies. I think I started too late in Jan 2006, if I started now I would have no chance at all.

However when I started there was 4 competitors now there is only 1, and soon the other guy will be the only one left. Basicaly you need to be charging £40 per job to make any money, but not a lot of people are willing to pay this just to setup broadband or have their PC speedup.

I am just looking at my business as a good part time business that can make good profits given the small outlay but has no scalability whats so ever.

As i have a full time job i am going to see how it kick starts

I am a programmer so ideally would like to develop an application which is niche! but its difficult!

doing pc's will not be the main business. Can do websites etc.. so whatever takes off!

thought got to start somewhere which is better than nothing! will let you know when the website is up!

so if anyone knows of any software they might think is useful let me know!

Hiya,

My partner is a fantastic software engineer too . Last year he though about trying computer repairs and decided to advertise in local papers, leaflet drop etc. He tried for several weeks but just kept getting calls from people who only wanted to pay a maximum of £20, regardless of the problem. For some unknown reason, we have found that many home users will rather pay a fortune to the big PC stores computer help rather than to support a local qualified engineer. Its so strange :|.

I wish you the best of luck.

Hi

I've been to a Business Link 'Marketing' workshop this morning, which I found very useful, it would be worth while taking a look at the this and the other courses they run for some ideas and direction. Many of the courses are still free.

I charge a flat rate of £40 per hour with it usually taking only an hour.
I am honest, clear and up front about any charges an i find people ae happy to pay that amount.

As for the website and programming side, get in contact with me maybe we can come up with something together that we can sell from your place in the country and mine. I would be happy to go into the software game especially as i can see a few niche markets that may have competitors but still worth looking into.

Thanks
Matt

Hi TJ,

As mentioned above, press releases are a good way to present news to journalists. However, even when you are targeting your local press you need to make sure the release is objective and newsworthy. You need to convey what is different or interesting about your business. A good way to think about it is, imagine the release is about rival company and consider if you would be interested - if not you may have to work out a better angle. This is worth your while, as it will only increase your chances of gaining coverage.

If you'd like anymore information on how to approach writing a press release feel free to ask me some questions.

Good luck

Vicky
