is there government funding for taking on staff

We are looking to take on some more staff members to take our business to the next level.

I did hear on our local radio that there is government funding (wages being contributed) to SME businesses taking on staff..

does anyone have more info on this?

Call you local Council and JobCentre Plus; there are various schemes including apprenticeships and free placement schemes.

Depending on your location in the UK, you may want to have a look at this - which reduces your employers NIC liability on new employees to zero, for a set time.

I heard something recently ... if I remember rightly it was along the lines of a genuine wage subsidy for taking on 'young long term' unemployed. It sounded like a new initiative.

As others have said there may be help if you take people on with a view to providing structured training and development. I wouldn't expect you'd get any help with hiring people who are in demand.
