Using and iPad and the sidebar on the left takes up too much space, is there a way to hide it in the forum settings?

Tried using an ad blocker to hide the element which works but the space remains empty and not filled by the forum on the right.

Do you find a lot of sites have similar problems? It seems very common for designers to look at desktop and phone size screens and ignore tablets.
Yes. Wordpress themes are the worst for this. Especially the junk you get from themeforest.

What makes you think it is a problem and isn't by accident?

Why would Sift want the Sidebar hidden on anything but a mobile?

If the screen resolution is similar to a desktop it makes every sense that it displays like a desktop, they can't account for everyone being like the OP

Stays there in both Landscape and Portrait on iPad Pro 10.5” using Safari :(

    Interesting. Never noticed this.

For what it's worth - using a Surface 10" tablet with a 21" monitor attached.

21" Monitor - Cast web page to right or left of screen and the sidebar still displays
Squeeze the web page display to just under half screen and it dissappears

Tablet screen - Same result as on monitor when web page display is cast to right or left in Landscape. Sidebar disappears when display is squeezed to a little narrower than half screen.
    Portrait - sidebar disappears.

    Can't see a control
