With Joomla I've always preferred the legacy version, because I found that sometimes upgrading a live site can sometimes end with something not working (often really with mods and stuff). But for creating brand new sites, I give the option of versions. After informing them if need be.

I have decided to hold off till 3.5 (though I have downloaded and played with the current 3 release). I am looking forward to its cross platform flexibility for smartphones etcetera.

On the other hand my own site is still 1.5 and I use Mobile Joomla to display on mobile devices which works well.

I am building new client sites on 2.5 (where Joomla is the CMS of choice) for the time being as many clients don't like the idea of using an "out of date" platform even if it is rock solid ...

Pretty much my own views too tbh. I use 2.5 and it's very good, but I'm not moving forward to 3 until it settles quite a bit.

Some of the 2.5 templates work very well on mobile devices.

Hi all,
Anyone using Joomla 3 for client sites yet, or are you still holding off for 3.5?
B

Nope, testing it though and YUP holding out ;)

It really is for early adopters and NON production sites and be warned, it can and will play havoc with your coms and mods...I know coz I have tried on a test environ.

Here is the word from Joomla Dev

The Joomla documentation states Joomla 3.0 is NOT for production sites. This doesn't mean it doesn't work, it simply means the team could throw you a curve ball. There is a promised upgrade from 2.5 to 3.5. Joomla 3.0 is a short term release.

STS versions of Joomla! belong to the Short Term Support releases cycle. Each STS cycle lasts 6 months. STS versions are not intended for use on production sites and should not be used unless you really know what you are doing.

Spot on Dave.

The core install is virtually error free but as I alluded to. Quite a few of my custom mods and coms need tweaking to run error free.

I learnt many moons ago with 1.6 to await the FSR rather than adopt the stepping stone into production sites.

As you rightly point out. Dev releases are subject to core changes during the cycle.

I still work with it in xammp locally though but thats just me fiddling...

Happy New Year all...

I advise for FREE. If I touch it, I charge.

If any vulnerabilities are found in supported versions patches are released.

Up to the point of end of life.

However, I do and always have used extra layers of security with every install so if one is missed by JD my client sites remain secure.

Maintaining and securing websites since 2004.

So it is not like wordpress that simply requires upgrading, although aside from themes and plugin's I realize the bases systems are quite secure as-is

It is similar yes, but once it reaches end of life, that is it. No more updates released.

But I would always advise you move onto the latest version anyway (by latest I mean full release not a stepping stone release as 3.0)

Daren
