Is it legal to work without a contract?

I've been in my job for 4 months and still haven't been issued with a contract. I have asked my manager about this but have been told that HR has a backlog to get through. What can I do about this? I always thought a contract was a legal requirement.

An agreement between two persons done through a handshake is considered binding. But, the proof of an existing contract is easily provided through a written one with witnesses and signed before an attorney. From what I know, the moment you agreed to work for them and have been receiving your salary there is already a contract between you. But, it is always good to have the written contract. You just need to wait for it then.

A contract must be issued within 3 months of starting the job, however it doesnt have to be a full contract - a brief summary is enough.

What can you do, put up with it and wait if you like your job, or leave and kick up a stink and attempt to take them to tribunal, I dont advise the latter unless you really hate them and wish to ruin your future work prospects.
