Is it better to give ONE BIG grand prize or MANY smaller prizes?

We have limited budget to offer cash prizes for a competition. So should be just giving 1 HUGE cash prize for the grand winner or smaller prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd winners?

What's your experience in users' response in this 2 scenarios?

Having undertaken similar exercises, I have to agree we have always had better responses where multiple prizes were available as opposed to a single prize.

Potential entrants are drawn to the increased chances of winning. The only thing to be wary of is that if you separate the prize budget that you don't make the prizes of so small a value that they lose their perceived value and overly reduce the overall drive for entrants.

We do competitions here but gift voucher not cash prize.

Personally with a £1000 pot i would go for maybe £500 1st and £250 2nd/3rd prizes.

If as you say you are looking for the potential entrants to try a product for the first time, I would personally adopt the smaller prize option.

You are really trying to tip them over the edge when making a decision relating on whether to buy or not and the greater chance of winning with smaller prizes is most likely going to do this.

(Does depend on what they are buying though, i'm assuming its relatively low value)
