hi all,

i am having a confusing time with google and seo, and i am wondering if anyone has any advise.

my website appears number 1 for the phrase "personalised reward charts" in most instances - considering this is my domain name and what my whole site is about, i expect it to really

however,

for the phrase "reward charts" i don't appear until around page 20, and this is one of my deeper pages not my front page.

now i know the phrase "reward charts" will have more competition, i struggle to see why my serp is sooo much worse.

any ideas?

thanks

Hi there.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm afraid, in a nutshell it is exactly that: According to Google's keyword tool, there are around 27,000 searches per month in the UK for "reward charts", but only 100 for "personalised reward charts".

Of course volume isn't directly tied to competition, but it's not surprising that there isn't a lot of competition for the latter.

There may be some other reasons, I can't be sure without looking at your site specifically. But I am not surprised by your position.

For very specific phrases it usually isn't hard to rank without even trying. But if you want to rank for much broader, more popular terms, you will have to invest (either effort or money) in some SEO.

Hope that clears things up.
Mark.

Thanks for the reply.

I generally feel my onsite SEO is pretty good, but i'm definitely lacking in the back links section, the only links i have are from forums, very few (if any) direct within site content.

I presume we can't post links on here as free members to ask people to view the site for their opinions?

Yep you are right, you can't post it here, all site reviews have to go in the site review area, which is inside the paid members section.

I looked at the page 1 sites for that phrase and even the 10th place site has somne pretty decent links in quantity and quality. so you are certainly going to have to fight for a page 1 listing.

Would it be better to focus on variations of "reward chart" (like you have done with "personalised reward chart)"?

As the above poster mentioned, targetting "reward charts" might be do-able...but tough.

For example,"reward charts" has 4,400 UK monthly searches but the folllowing have 3,320 searches in total:

behaviour charts
reward charts for kids
printable reward charts
